Review:
One of my favorite subgenres within the MFU fandom is the classic “how they met” story. The TV show began with Illya and Napoleon already teamed up so the exact details of how the two first came to be partners is prime fodder for many authors’ imaginations.
Despite its shorter length, Kate D.’s In the Beginning is one of the most memorable to me. It just rings that true. There is no instant inexplicable connection – in fact, the boys start off on a notably rocky footing – and the characterization works perfectly. Napoleon is an all-around good guy and even when he’s being a bit of an ass, he’s more oblivious than malicious. Illya is just the right blend of prickly and endearing without ever overbalancing to one side or the other. It’s also a bit of a holiday story – not overly so but a nice little touch if you’re in the mood to get in some last-minute Christmas in July spirit. ^_^
One of the best interpretations on the origins of Illya and Napoleon’s partnership and the set-up that has become my own personal canon.
In the Beginning…
