Title: this is not a chick flick
Author: bookesque
Fandom: Greek Mythology
Pairing: Hades/Persephone
Categories: Humor, Romance
Length: Medium
Warnings: n/a
Author on LJ:
bookesque
Author’s Summary: In which Hades awkwardly tries to woo Persephone to his side, while the Olympian gods offer unhelpful advice and prove they know nothing about love.
Review:
Utterly brilliant. I’ve always been a geek for Roman/Greek mythology (in elementary school, I fangirled mythology before I even knew what fangirling meant), so finding this little gem was just about the best thing ever.
It’s a retelling of the Hades and Persephone story, taking the gods and actually making characters out of them – or satirizing them; the Greek gods are so outrageous even in the original myths that it’s hard to tell sometimes. There are cameos from various gods, all of them hysterical. Hades is fabulous – the dry, comparatively sane one in the Olympian family – and Persephone actually gets to have some character and spunkiness in this rendition (if you’re up on your mythology, this version is more in line with the one Psyche met than the meadow-frolicking innocent she typically gets portrayed as).
Despite its title, I actually found Hades and Persephone’s courtship rather endearing in the end. It makes for a funny, sweet, oddball romance.
