This fic is seriously mind bending and shocking in its strangeness and sharp simplicity. It makes you face emptiness and re-evaluate your priorities. It's exceedingly clever and even if it's not your cup of tea, Libraryofsol's fics are a pix'n'mix of excellence in most fandoms.

Yet rose ceremony after ceremony he receives a rose from John much to his surprise and John's.

Review:
This story will forever stick in my heart as my favourite Sherlock fanfic. I rarely read gen but the emotion in this story makes me wish that there was a completely separate label for fics that have the best kinds of family love even when there is no romance.

And John is so uniquely lovable you can't even blame Sherlock for loving the grumpy eight year old wrapped in a woolly jumpers.

I've read a lot of fics where John gets to go back in time and redo all the cases and impress Sherlock with his foresight. But this fic tops them all by making you forget it's copying the episodes.

It is it's own true story with original characters that will become special to you and a storyline that makes you fall for John and Sherlock like you never even knew them. You ache for Sherlock who is presented with a tantalising puzzle in the young John that can never be solved. And John, who keeps major pieces of the puzzle to himself so that he can keep Sherlock as his and keep him safe at the same time.

I thought as I was reading this that it would be one of those fics that would go on forever until the writer lost their way. I thought there could never be an ending that would satisfy the height on which it had been brought to. I was wrong on all accounts. The ending made so much sense and I would never have thought of it in a million years. While with a fic this good I would have wanted it to last forever, no one can deny it made sense to end it where it was.

Review:
This fic is pretty much the example of don't judge a book by it's cover. I would not have given this fic a second look if it had not been on someones rec list. And I am not a fan of the swan princess because a prince that stupid shouldn't rule over anyone one day. Which is why this fic literally is the nicest surprise. It will grab your heart in a way only love can. You grow up with John and Sherlock from the sweet tooth rotting sweetness of when Sherlock is born to their constant fighting as they get older to realising what they are to each other just as John's about to go away.

Rather than the thrilling mystery and fondness you feel over canon Sherlock and John, you feel like you know everything about the characters in the story from very early on and not only do you like these characters but that these characters at it for you. I dare anyone to read this story and swear they are not soul crushingly in deep love with both Sherlock and John.

Best of all I love how pennin_ink manages to write Sherlock. A couple of times over the story the writer writes a paragraph about how Sherlock looks to another and heart in your throat and beating out your chest your mind latches onto it. And it's usually something simple like Shelock walking down the stairs or being sad in the woods. It certainly is inspiring to any fan artist out there who want to paint themselves something.

Don't just listen to this rec though, check out many others that can be found through google. The least articulate usually show someone scoffing at the premise of Sherlock as a swan princess and ending in a computer being heaved dramatically out of a window at the sheer emotion the fic grips you with. I admit the fic got me so bad I immediately went out looking for a swan necklace myself and only found a tiny charm which is now my favourite.

Review:
I absolutely love daemon!fic. Seeing what reasons different authors give for their decisions about what daemons characters should have is something I find interesting in and of itself, and daemon-related angst and hurt/comfort pleases me even more. The presence of daemons gives an extra dynamic to any drama, being an obvious physical avatar to look at matters of the psyche and the soul through.

It's HDM canon that intense trauma can cause a daemon settle early, or in this fics case not settle at all. John struggles with his growing feelings for Sherlock as he finds out just how strange the man and his daemon are. As expected, Sherlock's daemon is far from normal, even aside from being unsettled, and the gradual revelation of all their idiosyncracies was a compelling read. I loved all the daemons in this fic, and thought that the authors 'casting' decisions for them were fitting and well-reasoned. The inclusion of a daemon-specific crime to solve adds a new avenue for drama, and is just as tense and horrifying as it should be when we're talking about toying with peoples souls. The romance is gradual as Sherlock's past and with it the reason for his daemons unsettled form are revealed. The author is careful to show that not all wounds can be fully healed, and the ending is all the more heartwarming for its realism.

Review:
Now, admittedly, I have many 'favorite' cliches (if only because I can never decide what I really like best). One of those cliches that I happen to enjoy is taking a character from a show and having them be a girl. And not turn into a girl because to my mind that's an entire cliche to itself (it is! Really!), but having the character always be a girl. This is one of those fics and it's done beautifully.

The writing will make you laugh and then cry and then want to beat the characters (and maybe the author except the author has to continue writing for the sake of everyone but mostly just me) and then love everyone and everything. It's complex and just so well done it's amazing.

What I love is how the fic doesn't shy away from the fact that George is a girl but she's still George. You don't just stick a character in a female body and call it a day; you take the character, keep the core of what they are, and still keep in mind that they're female now. How people react around George is slightly different because of it, and that's such an important detail.

The relationship between Mycroft and George... Honestly, I just want to swoon all over the place (which is horribly embarrassing, okay). It's steady and a little more low key, but it's wonderful and not quite perfect, but I'm calling it perfect because I love it so.

Just set aside a good chunk of time to read this because it's so well worth the time.

Review:
Despite the premise, this is too smart to be just cute or cracky. It's funny and often touching, like Buffy's "Once More With Feeling." Except here, instead of being temporary, shared music is a fact of life. flawedamythyst gives us real a sense of that with lines like:

Sherlock spared him a glance. “You're late,” he observed.

John made a face. “Got caught up in a street ensemble of It's Bloody Raining Again,"

And, upon shooting the serial killer from A Study in Pink to the swell of rushing music:

"[John] wanted to blame the music, but everyone knew that didn't count as a defence in court."

This is basically canon compliant until the end of season 2, but with added issues brought about by the uncontrollable need to break into song. John is confused and hurt by Sherlock's unwillingness to sing with him. Then he realizes Sherlock has never sung a duet or offered backup vocals on a family chorus or police song. The author focuses on these issues and less on the details of cases we've already seen, so I never felt like this was a rehash of the series with something slapped on top. Plus the lyrics are well written; I had no trouble imagining the accompanying tunes to dangerous chases and heartfelt declarations alike.

Review:
Beginning in early childhood, Sherlock learns painful lessons about what it means to connect with others, and by the time he's 34, he's sure he understands the whole uncomfortable mess. Then he meets John.

The 'five+ things' trope lets us drop into Sherlock's life at ages 5, 10, 16, 20, 27 and 34 without a long epic. Sherlock learns in very different ways to be cynical and closed off, because he can't help deducing the problems between his parents and later between his schoolmates and between himself and Victor. The childhood years especially, before the cynicism sets in, make you want to console and reassure him. I love the repeated paragraph full of mark-throughs and revisions, like the chorus of a song, updating his conclusions. The awkward sex seems just right for someone who can't easily get lost in sensation and who mistrusts the motivations of others. And of course, I loved the revelation of John and the tectonic shift in Sherlock's understanding when he finds he belongs to an Us.

Review:
We get a glimpse of another reality here, just long enough to understand a different John's life, and to see how his unusual perception 1) completely changes the end of The Great Game, and 2) opens up a world of possibilities and a new level of trust with Sherlock.

I recced another etothepii AU fic here; etothepii not only writes what I like --- my last rec was for demon!Sherlock, and this one is full to the brim with anthropomorphism, another favorite theme --- but also takes the time to really think things through. Here the world of sentient and sometimes-talkative objects has its own set of well reasoned rules. For example, "It's one thing to ask an object to do something it hasn't been told not to do. It's an entirely different challenge to make it not do something it's supposed to do."

Despite the story's short length, the premise is well described and so matter-of-fact that I felt myself going easily along with the garbage disposal that doesn't like sitting around with dirty blades (who would?) and the many objects that are wary of strangers.

Of course I would've enjoyed continuing on, but I feel like I have a good idea of what the future will hold for John and Sherlock with a new understanding between them and the ways Sherlock will want to use John's ability in their work together.

Some ridiculous experiment about body warmth or respiratory rates or testing a new way of picking pockets. Sherlock does the unimaginable for bizarre reasons, but behind it, there's always logic and curiosity. Sometimes, it just takes him a while to explain it to John.

Review:
This is well written and clever, with Sherlock making things far more complicated than they need to be and John having a hard time figuring out why Sherlock changed the rules of their relationship with no notice.

I particularly liked the phone call with Mycroft, John getting a clue about the series of 'restaurant critiques', and the way a single miscalculation can throw off all Sherlock's careful machinations.

It's sweet and funny with great dialog, and it's a terrific read.

My review's shorter than usual, because I'm feeling under the weather today, but if you haven't read this 2010 story, don't let it keep you from giving this a read!

One that looked decidedly like John Watson. And this would be the perfect chance to make things right with Bilbo the way he really hadn't been able to before he died, and that's when Gandalf tells him John doesn't remember being Bilbo, and to leave him alone.

Right. Like that's going to happen.

Review: This series is a great romantic thriller. All the characters are a good combination of who they were in their passed lives and who they are in their present lives.

The villians are a nice mix of new and old, and it keeps you guessing. Authoressjean even manages to throw in a few curve-balls to add to the whole experience.

I can't tell you much about the plot, without giving away the twists and turns, but there is a very nice romance twisted in among all of the intrigue, and no matter how bleak it seems when you are reading it, the ending is nice and happy.

Review:
Earlgreytea68 bumps up the timeline so that Sherlock meets John at Eton when they're sixteen, and over the course of 139k words, she shows us all the ways that changes both their lives -- and Mycroft and Greg's lives as well. But she's also ingenious at bringing in familiar characters and plotlines in a way that rings true and keeps this close to canon.

The story opens with eighteen-year-old Mycroft handling their mother's funeral and the responsibility of eleven-year-old Sherlock. I felt especially bad for Mycroft and how much he demanded of himself as the older brother. In fact, as much as I loved Sherlock and John in this story, it was Sherlock's relationship with Mycroft that might have been my favorite part; they're so in character, but this new set of circumstances allows for some differences in how they come to understand one another.

John showing up early means he's able to balance Sherlock out some of the time, but John's changed by the early association too. There are parallels between him and Mycroft since John has been forced to be the primary caretaker of his own family at a young age, due to alcoholism rather than death, and meeting the Holmes brothers affects his home life and his choices.

Earlgreytea68 writes this beautifully. The dialog's great. Although she says she wondered what would happen if she gave the Holmes boys "everything they needed to fix themselves" early on, she doesn't oversimplify; there are definite struggles to get where they're going. Everyone's complex and in character. Greg is a tutor with a friend at Scotland Yard and an interest in Mycroft. Ms. Hudson is the nanny, and Moriarty provides danger and tension. Little touches like Mycroft's umbrella at the beginning and end show how well the author knows and loves these characters.

Sherlock's a demon, but although he's done some pretty nasty things in his past, he's lived so long that he's bored now. He and Mycroft, "know that nothing they do really matters, in the grand scheme of things. One day there will be a final battle, where Heaven and Hell will compete for their final victory. And it will be a really big deal, they're sure. But until that day comes, both sides are in and will remain in a holding pattern..."

Enter John, who fascinates Sherlock despite the inconvenience of pretending to be human around him. John's surprised that Sherlock believes in God, but what he doesn't know is that there's no faith involved.

There are cases, souls on the line, secrets revealed, and Moriarty's games. Etothepii sets everything in a believable grey area where demons are damned but capable of emotional attachment, and where angels and demons can secretly work together. The relationship between Mycroft and Sherlock is very well done; I love that they rely on one another even as they argue over which side gets whose souls. It's very in character for both of them. Actually, everything about the fusion slots seamlessly into place (though you don't need to have read Good Omens to understand and enjoy). And Sherlock's feelings for John and his trust in him are the heart of the story.

Review:
After a few complicated days at work, I was looking for some heart-warming and fluffy fics to read and here is one of the gems I went back to. I just love the slow pace of this story which is matching the evolution of Sherlock and John's relationship. The main characters are quite recognizable and the rest of the cast is just spot on. Just look at Mrs. Hudson and Sally Donovan...
The writing is gorgeous, showing the delicacy of the feelings between the different characters while never being over the top. It's just one of those perfect stories you want to read at home with a hot drink, hiding from the rest of the world.

Review:
When John realizes his life is odd enough that he can hardly make it worse, he gives in to a desire to kiss Sherlock. It's a move that should be straight forward, except that Sherlock has a starring role. Luckily, John's understanding and acceptance of how Sherlock thinks makes things work. (When Sherlock eventually asks John where he can touch, John says, "Eyes are right out. Front teeth are all right, but back ones'd be a bit odd.") And despite misunderstandings on both sides, John figures out what's going on between them before Sherlock does, something Resonant makes believable.

It's sweet and smart, with a smidge of angst, and offbeat enough that you won't feel like you've read it before... Unless you actually have read it before; it's a fandom favorite from two years ago. And definitely worth a second read!

Review: This is a great family fic. Sherlock as Q's brother is a fairly common trope in the Skyfall fandom, but this is definitely one of my favorites.

All three of the Holmes brothers are very in character, without taking over the story. James Bond is bad-ass enough to be believable while still being vulnerable enough to let Q be bad-ass as well.

All together in makes for an amusing and heart-warming story.

Review:
I'm presenting a short fic today but it made me laugh a few days ago and I didn't want to miss reccing it.
I often enjoy well-plotted crossover. And this one, while completely crack-ish is very well-done. The author ties the plots of both fandoms with ease.
Goldenusagi created great dialogs. Both Sherlock and Mycroft are very much in characters. And the banter between all the characters is spot on.
If you want to have fun, just go. You won't regret it.

Review:
Here is one of the best case file of this fandom. The plot is amazing and very believable. The author takes a few scenes from the first season and runs with them in the best way possible.
The characterizations are spot on. Sherlock, John and Mycroft are well-crafted as are the different OCs. The dialogs really add to the story line and are well-written.
