Author's Summary:
In the wake of Jack's disappearance, Gwen finds comfort in a new friendship with Ianto. Gossip, bonding, and other hijinks of understanding ensue.

Review:
Pretty much what it says on the tin; Gwen and Ianto become kickass BFFs. This fic did what the show itself failed to, making me actually like Gwen. In this fic she's a much more fully fleshed out character, rather than the ordinary-yet-somehow-special-because-reasons one I felt she was in canon. She and Ianto bond over their Welshness, their mutual love/exasperation for Jack Harkness, and the sheer weirdness of working for Torchwood. They pick each other up when they get down, they kick ass together, they have in jokes; they're simply awesome, and it's so satisfying to read.

Title: Parts of the Process
Fandom: Doctor Who/Torchwood
Pairing: Jack/Ianto, platonic Doctor/Ianto
Genres: AU, Crossover, Adventure, Romance, Hurt/Comfort
Length: Epic (49,182 words)
Warnings: Torture, one instance of period-specific racism

Author's Summary:
And although Ianto goes hurtling through the universe, crossing time and space seems to teach him one thing in particular – that all roads lead to Rome.

Review:
I love me some Ianto fic, and the rare and beautiful fics where he interacts with the Doctor really make me happy. Set during Jacks absence from Torchwood, the Doctor crash lands and regenerates in Ianto's garden. Keen for a break from a Jack-less Torchwood, Ianto joins the Doctor as a companion. What follows is, of course, adventures through space and time, including Ianto meeting some past versions of Jack and training at the Time Agency academy.

The best feature of this story is the relationship between Ianto and the Doctor. Rather than regenerating into the usual adult white man, the Doctor is instead an Indian teenager. This doesn't come off as gimmicky at all; it's rarely mentioned directly by the author, and the changes it makes to the Doctors interactions with strangers and the usual Doctor/Companion relationship are made obvious through show rather than tell. His youth means strangers talk to Ianto before they do him, and also tones down his usual confidence/arrogance into something a little more vulnerable and human. This different dynamic makes for plenty of touching and funny moments, and elevates the fic into something lovely and unique with a surprisingly sweet tone.

Title: To The Sticking Place

Length: Epic (96,673 words)
Warnings: Gore, past suicide, past abuse, off-screen torture

Author's Summary:
The end justifies the means. Failure is not an option. There is always a choice, except when there isn't. These are the phrases Ianto Jones lives by and he refuses to allow anyone, even Captain Jack Harkness, to change that.

Review:
Jack is forced by Yvonne Hartman of Torchwood One fame to take one of her top agents into his team - Agent Ianto Jones. This is a far more damaged and hardened Ianto, undisturbed by the crueller methods of Torchwood One not due to sadism, but rather apathy formed by a far harsher past than the one that canon Ianto experienced.

Despite all his antagonistic qualities, this is a version of Ianto just as easy to love as his canon incarnation. It's easy to feel sorry for this clearly depressed Ianto who is looked upon with disgust and suspicion by the rest of Torchwood Three. The team isn't happy about his presence at Three, with Ianto viewed as the loose cannon who could any minute go off on an alien-murdering rampage, held back only by Jack's orders. Though I love the team at Three it's easy to see them acting like this, determined to see their world in shades of black and white, with a stubborn Jack certainly not helping matters. Ianto has to deal not only with their undisguised suspicion, but also their chaotic working environment, obviously not one that would be acceptable at One.

The Ianto/Jack is understandably a slow build, as Jack slowly overcomes his prejudices and actually bothers to look below the surface when it comes to Ianto, and a still-hurting Ianto begins to recover somewhat from what he's been through. This whole fic is a slow carthasis for both them, and it was for me as a reader too, seeing these damaged two become whole again together. Ianto is almost woobie-like in his characterisation, but thankfully the author has a great handle on his sarcasm and pragmatism, two of my favourite of Ianto's characteristics. Ianto is a bit down but certainly not out, with his quiet strength shining through and really making you root for him.

There's an alien in the Hub, and it's trying to communicate.

Review:

Fair warning, this is an entirely self-indulgent rec, chosen for no specific redeeming qualities aside from the way it tickles my fancy, being a long-time fan of science fiction and the Internet.

Reading about aliens, watching aliens on the movie or tv screen, playing video games, I've always wondered what actual aliens would think of humanity, particularly in this e-renaissance where the only limit on creativity is your available bandwidth. What would they think of the structured chaos of internet memes, or the billion and one cat gifs on tumblr? Why 140 characters? Less than three and semicolon close parentheses? Good lord, what would they think of pornography in all the myriad formats and varieties we create it in?

Personally, I don't much care, seeing as what they choose to think about us is well out of my hands, but fics like Trying To Communicate make it fun to wonder.

Review:
Jack decides to jump-start his proto-TARDIS coral's growth with a little microwaving.. It works, creating a microwave/TARDIS after Jack's heart, and reasons for Gwen to never ever be the first one into work. Ianto, Jack and Gwen are all hilarious (especially Ianto's internal monologue). This is a silly bit of early Torchwood fun, and it gives me the giggles.

Ianto and Tosh have been kidnapped. This is how they cope.

Review:
Ianto and Tosh were my two favorite characters on Torchwood and I’m always on the lookout for fic featuring friendship between the two. I read this years ago and it has stuck with me for several reasons. The first being the superb Tosh and Ianto interactions and friendship. The second is the way the author deftly weaves humor into a seemingly hopeless and horror filled situation. I appreciated the way one of the characters would venture too close to the truth of their situation and how humor would be employed to pull the other back away from the edge. There are several times during their captivity that Tosh and Ianto are laughing, but in my mind it’s always tinged with a little mania and fear as well.

Overall a really great story that is unique and memorable.

Life As We Knew It by Kendermouse (NC-17)

Review:  Life As We Knew It deals with what happened to Torchwood Three during the time that Jack was absent between season one and two of Torchwood. It's about the team trying to fill the hole that he left behind, and in that exact situation, the original Jack Harkness falls through the rift and into their time and somehow they make it work together.

I really enjoy the way that the interaction between 1940s Jack (later re-named as John) and Ianto is described, especially the difficulty of dealing with having loved the same person and being left behind by them.

And the way [livejournal.com profile] kendermouse brings not only Jack Harkness, but all of the secondary characters to life is just beautiful -- especially as all kinds of different relationships are tastefully handled by the author.

But probably my favorite part of the fic starts when the Jack we know, Captain Jack Harkness, immortal conman, comes back from the possibly worst year of his life and expects everything to be the same, when it really isn't and he struggles to deal with the status quo in both his personal and professional life.

This is one of the stories from the older TARDIS Big Bangs that I periodically re-read. It's a different kind of story because there's not a lot of long post-"Jack Harkness" fic out there even though the situation is one of the most interesting ones in canon.

I very much rec this fic to everyone who enjoys the perfect blend of canon and fleshed out original characters.

Review: This is the story of how coffee can help a man live on through enteriny in the memory of the man he loves.

I think a quote from Jack himself is the best way to sum the story up: "One day, after you’re gone, when Torchwood is just a memory and the Human race has taken to the stars, I'll go to that Café and I'll have a cup coffee and think of you. Remember you,"

The Grand Cafe is a fluffy bit of fic, good for giving you the warm and fuzzies. I love a good Jack remembering Ianto throughout time fic, and this is a great and creative representation of the genre, with the added twist of a trip though time.
