Review:
When Henry Bennet, only son and heir to an eccentric country squire, crosses paths with Catherine Darcy of Pemberley, she publicly insults him and runs interference in his sister's romance. Naturally, proposals, matchmaking messes, an elopement, an abundance of mixed signals, and massive misunderstandings ensue.

I’ve always been hesitant to rec a “Pride and Prejudice” fic because it seems like there’s a very fine line between people absolutely loving them and people absolutely hating them. Having said that, this fic is just too good to resist sharing. Based in a universe where Darcy and Elizabeth’s genders are turned on their heads, this fic manages to be well-written and delightfully executed, with the author using every bit of her artistic license to keep things fresh, fun, and interesting. Which is no small feat considering how many and varied the stories in this particular fandom and with this particular pairing can be.

Though there are many enjoyable aspects of this fic, fabulous characterization chief among them, the one thing that really stands out to me is that, though their genders are reversed and, due to necessity, a few key elements are changed, the story is, at its heart, essentially the same one we know and love. That means there’s still the villainous Wickham, the ever popular proposal scene, and more misunderstandings and pride than you can shake a stick at. Despite the fact that some readers might balk at the idea of reading this, I definitely recommend it to those of you who are willing to take a chance on this new version of Miss Darcy and Mr Bennet.

Title: In Sickness And In Health.
Fandom: Pride and Prejudice.
Pairing: Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy, Jane Bennet/Charles Bingley.

Warnings: Character death (one of the Bennet sisters, but not Lizzy or Jane), serious illness.

Review:
During the winter Jane spends in London a devastating illness spreads through Hertfordshire, claiming the life of one of the youngest Bennet sisters and leaving Elizabeth (who had been responsible for nursing her) physically weakened. It is this fragile Elizabeth that Darcy meets in Hunsford.

One of the things I like most about this story is how the events in Hertfordshire affect all the characters involved. Elizabeth, though burdened by illness and grief, undergoes a process of self-realization that requires no letter. Her weakened condition draws Darcy's protective nature, completely obliterating his objections to acting upon his feelings. Mrs. Bennet, overwrought by grief, blames Elizabeth for what has happened, while her husband can do nothing to dissuade her. The remaining Bennet sisters rise to the occasion, becoming better persons in their sorrow.

Though there are some minor things that bother me in the course of the story (a couple of rather modern turns of phrase come to mind), all in all this an interesting fic

Happenstance by Abby B (R)

  • Feb. 16th, 2010 at 6:57 AM
Title: Happenstance.
Fandom: Pride and Prejudice.
Pairing: Fitzwilliam Darcy/Elizabeth Bennet.
Categories: Angst, Marriage of Convenience, Romance.
Length: Epic (~198.000 words).
Warnings: None.

Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a

Author's Summary: "An inopportune meeting in a wooded area near Longbourn results in salacious gossip which threatens to wreak havoc to both Darcy's and Elizabeth's reputation. A forced marriage results wherein both characters must convince a discerning public that their marriage is "real". Private angry battles are at war with a public united front."

Review:
As forced marriages/marriages of convenience were not uncomon during the stricter moral code of Jane Austen's Regency England, a "Pride and Prejudice" fic seemed perfect for this month's theme. A careless act on Darcy's part soon after the Netherfield Ball leads to his marriage to Elizabeth to save their reputations. Darcy, due to all his objections to her family, is unhappy with their situation at first, but his attraction to Elizabeth and her competence as Mrs. Darcy soon make him wish to make them marriage more than a façade. Elizabeth, on the other hand, harbors not only a great dislike for him but also blames him for the position they find themselves in.

Elizabeth and Darcy's relationship is the undisputed center of the story and the way that it is written is what makes it work. There's a lot of conflict at first as they continuously misunderstand each other (Darcy even goes through a "Hunsford" rejection, though one of a slightly different kind), but it's believable considering both the characters and the circumstances. The inevitable romantic development is well handled, as are their interactions with other characters, canon or original.

All in all, this is a long, satisfying read for fans of the MoC genre.

Author's Summary:
"For Darcy, logic was forever clouded by color."

Review:
One of the major problems with Austen fic (and P&P ones in particular, as they comprise 90% of the fandom) is that after a while most stories start blurring together, as they tend to be variations of the same plots.

"The Color of Love" is a rare fic that, while keeping with some of the novel's themes (like how deceitful first impressions can be), brings something new to the table. In it Darcy has a condition known as synesthesia, which makes him perceive the written words in different colors. It is both a curse and a blessing, for while it can obscure the true nature of some people, it can also make him understand his innermost desires. Through the fic's beautiful imagery, Darcy's perspective on his life and the events of the novel bring an original and wonderfully crafted perspective to one of literature's most famous love stories.
