The Lucifer Match by Gwyneth Rhys (NC-17)

Title: The Lucifer Match by Gwyneth Rhys
Fandom: Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Chris/Vin
Categories: Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Post-Canon, Romance
Length: Epic (50,000+)
Warnings: While I wouldn’t necessarily categorize this as a darkfic, it does contain a lot of dark themes, situations, dubious consent, and character death so please be aware before reading.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r
Website: Chez Gwyn

Author’s Summary: A novel that's mostly about fire, in many forms: the aftermath of loss, its purging nature, the destructive force of a wildfire, the fever of obsession, and the flame of love.

Review:
I have to admit that the first time I read this story, I had no clue what it was going to be about. It was simply sitting on a Magnificent Seven rec list with no summary or pairing attached and I decided that I liked the title so I gave it a shot. I’m so glad I did.

Tapping out somewhere in the novel-length category, The Lucifer Match is as much about pain and loss as it is about hope and redemption, with all of those sometimes weaving together so tightly in the story it’s hard to tell one from the other. Chris, in particular, is put through an emotional wringer that ends up affecting all of the seven, and both helps and hinders his growing relationship with Vin. Despite all the angst and hurt (of which there is a lot) in this fic, the author still does an admirable job of creating a storyline that makes the reader feel hope for a better future for all the characters, as well as finally close a dark chapter in Chris’ past.

Overall, I’d say that if you’re looking for a story to sink your teeth into or are just curious about how things might have went after the series ended, this is the fic for you.

Pairing: Chris/Vin
Categories: post-canon, angst, action, hurt/comfort
Length: Very Long (~33,000 words)
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: n/a?

Review:
A (slightly) AU version of Obsession -- what if Chris and Vin were already involved when Ella Gains entered the picture? Would things have turned out differently?

There are a *lot* of Obsession fics out there, and this is one of the best -- the episode itself is fleshed out enough that folks who have seen the episode can enjoy the story, and yet has enough episode dialogue and plot points that even people new to the fandom can read it as if it's an original storyline and not get confused. Even better, Stacie points out some inconsistencies in canon that may or may not have been intentional, but which have long-lasting repercussions for Chris.

At the character level, there is angst galore in the Chris/Vin relationship and Vin's character is especially interesting -- why exactly does he stick with Christ through the episode, and how does it impact their relationship? Even better, the second half of the fic goes beyond the episode to show what happens next and how Chris and Vin begin to heal.

A very solidly written and well plotted fic.

Author: Sue Necessary
Fandom: Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Chris/Vin
Categories: Romance, AU, hurt/comfort, angst, first time
Length: Epic
Author on LJ: n/a?

Author's summary: Something has gone wrong in Chris's friendship with Vin, and both men are suffering because of it.

Review:
SueN is my go-to author when I want angst, particularly of the Vin variety, and featuring a strong Chris-and-Vin relationship (whether gen or slash). This story set in the ATF!AU is chronicles Chris and Vin getting together after a good dash of angsting, hurt/comfort, and martyr!Vin. Seriously, there is a certain amount of melodrama to go along with the romance but sometimes, that's just what you're in the mood for. Chris starts off as a real asshole (responsible for most of the hurt in the aforementioned hurt/comfort) but shapes up pretty quickly which means that most of the story is spent on the comfort.

It's a guilty pleasure for me, but I'll admit it, this story just makes me go gooey inside.

Cold Enough to Snow by Gwyneth Rhys (PG)

Author: Gwyneth Rhys
Fandom: Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Chris/Vin
Categories: post-series, Sad Stories for Sundays
Length: Medium
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r

Author's summary:
Set a few years in the future from the show's universe, Chris and Vin are reunited in a different place and time, coming to terms with regrets and second chances.

Review:
If I could sum up Gwyneth's Cold Enough to Snow in one word it would be "bittersweet." It takes place years after the series, after the Seven have gone their separate ways (after all, there's no way their unorthodox arrangement could last forever). Vin finds Chris and the two of them get the chance to reconnect. The ease in which they interact and the clear affection between the two is beautifully written - Chris and Vin feel real and true, albeit a bit older and tireder. That's the sweet. The bitter part is that even in getting a second chance, there's no way to make up for the loss of the first chance and the loss of those years. Although neither character actually dies in the story, there is an impending death that sort of shadows over the entire story and Vin and Chris's reunion.

Poetic, understated, and bittersweet.
