Review: This art blew my mind! It’s incredibly shiny and pretty and I absolutely love the expression on their faces. Sakura is full of innocence in her smile and the intensity in both Yue and Kero is amazing. Another thing that is amazing is how the levels work in the picture, coming from Yue, then to Sakura and lastly to Kero.

There are other detail worth mentioning: Sakura and Yue holding hands, the cards spread around all of them, the movement in both Yue and Kero on their wings, the lovely sparkly sky in the background.

The artist also had a lot of other amazing fanarts, so check them out!

Author's Summary:
Omega wolves are so rare Dean Winchester never thought he’d meet one in his lifetime, let alone end up involved with one. But when the strange, enigmatic Castiel comes to Jackson Springs, one instinctive act of kindness throws the two of them together. Bound by instinct and something that runs much, much deeper, Dean finds himself torn between family, duty, and the stranger who's already burrowed deep under his skin.

Review:
I've read this fic so many times. The prose flows so nicely, it has a great balance of drama and romance, and it's not over the top or shoddily written as Omegaverse can sometimes be. It's a fun read with a satisfying resolution. Yes, this is a fic where omegas go into heat and alphas seek them out, but it focuses on Dean and Castiel's journeys to happiness rather than their sex life. There's no healing alpha cock in sight, and in fact Dean is the one who's the most unsure about his path in life.

Castiel is entirely himself in this fic. Though it's implied that he's had a rough or at least very isolated past, he's nowhere near a damsel dreaming of the strong arms of an alpha - he's already made his escape into the wider world and is living happily with Gabriel and Balthazar. It's Dean's issues with pack politics and his struggle with being an alpha that are the main focus of the fic, particularly his relationships with an asshole John, the usurper Azazel and a rebellious Sam who wants to get away from pack life. Though this isn't a groundbreaking fic, it's a solid, easy read that always makes me feel good.

Author's Summary:
Leon was used to living alone and going through the motions of his easy but dull life. Then, one night, a strange blond crashed into his bushes from out of nowhere, and he was drawn into a world no human ever dreamed of.

Review:
Leon, going through the motions as he writes trashy romance novels and mourns the death of Rinoa, his only contact with the outside world his little brother Sora (of KH fame), has his lonely life shaken up by the abrupt entry of Cloud. Damaged physically and mentally, Cloud is a fallen soldier bearing unwanted enhancements in the form of wings and superhuman power, and embroiled in a war he has never wanted any part of. A lot of this fic is about his slow recovery and the equally slow development of his and Leon's relationship. The hurt/comfort is a balm against all the horrors that Cloud has been subjected to - which are all thankfully offscreen, keeping this story from being pure angst despite its dark themes. The other half of the fic is devoted to the action, with Sephiroth and his three clones the antagonists, Clouds former torturers who are eager to claim him back. Leon's protection of Cloud is definitely satisfying, but best of all is that even when Cloud is understandably fragile, his bravery and compassion still shine through, and he fights at Leon's side.

The characters are all either their KH or Advent Children versions. There are some Organisation X cameos and the KH trio of Sora, Kairi and Riku are main characters, but as long as you know those three you hopefully won't be too confused. Leon is pretty much an older and less bratty Squall. Cloud is definitely his angstier Advent Children self, as is Sephiroth.

Bones is a werewolf.

The moment he meant James Kirk, got a good whiff of his scent, he knew he was fucked.

He had thought those stories about werewolves scenting their mate were all bullshit.

But the stories about mating for life have got to be fake, right? Right?

Review:
Werewolf!Bones, his species a secret, finds out Jim is his soulmate the first time they meet during their training. Cue angst and pining, as Bones has to deal with the fact that his mate is a slutty commitment-phobe who has no idea werewolves exist. The dynamics between the rest of the crew are also a feature here, giving more depth to a familiar trope. The friendship between Bones and fellow werewolf Uhura is lovely, as is the rallying of the crew as a whole around their non-human members. This is first and foremost a great romance fic that doesn't fall too deep into melodrama, as well as a great retelling of the growth of friendship between all crew members.

Summary: Other devils might enjoy offering fruit to tempt the innocent into damnation, but Sebastian -- he much prefers sharing it with one already damned.

Review: As Ciel eats his orange after the Book of Circus arc, Sebastian reflects on his own hunger, on temptation, damnation, and forbidden fruit. But as the summary implies, Sebastian's role is not to tempt in this story. Ciel is already damned, and once again, he has an order that surprises Sebastian.

This is a hard story to rec without spoiling its central premise, which is one of the main reasons I've hesitated to post about it here. But [livejournal.com profile] dustofwarfare is one of my favorite Kuroshitsuji writers, and this is a great read to start off 2015's year of recs. Her Sebastian is always a delight to read, and always a refreshing change from the many mundane AUs floating around. As in furnace room lullaby, which I previously recced here, Sebastian is more demon than butler in this fic, and Ciel wouldn't have it any other way. As the warnings imply, this story is not for everyone. This is a Sebastian who, as in canon, literally hungers for his master, and a Ciel who gets off on testing the limits on that hunger and of his demon's patience. Ciel is canon-aged in this story, so there is shota/underage. However, it does not particularly focus on his youth as a kink. Instead, [livejournal.com profile] dustofwarfare highlights the qualities that make Ciel so formidable in canon. He may be damned, but he knows it, and he's quite prepared to step into that good night with Sebastian when the time comes. In the meantime, Ciel, as always, knows exactly what he wants -- and he expects Sebastian to deliver it.

Summary: Ciel is held hostage by personal demons. Sebastian vows to do whatever it takes to recover his lost master.

Review: Ciel, now twenty, is determined to take out a serial killer on his own, having ordered Sebastian off to France on a wild goose chase. This works out about as well as you'd expect.

Where to even start with this story? I found it during an idle sweep of AO3 one lazy morning while only grudgingly awake and not quite ready to get out of bed yet. I clicked on "Chasing Butterflies," read the first two paragraphs, and immediately got out of bed to make coffee because I could tell I'd stumbled across something good and I wanted to be awake for it. And, yes, it was worth getting out of bed for!

As the tight third-person limited narrative dances around the story's central question of why Ciel sent Sebastian away, it reveals new questions, and new facets of their relationship. Haldolhs lays out a tantalizing path of crumbs that hint at Ciel's life from thirteen to twenty without ever losing the present conflict in drawn-out backstory. The end result is that Ciel is recognizably himself, but more so, his forceful personality and reckless streak rooted in an adult's sense of self. If Ciel manages to survive to twenty in the manga, he will probably end up something like this. Sebastian, too, is beautifully characterized in this, though I feel I can't say too much about his role without giving away the plot. His dialogue is spot-on, though, as are the power dynamics between them. I also appreciated that this is one of the few Kuroshitsuji stories I've read that lets Ciel top. "Chasing Butterflies" is one of those stories that reads like a jigsaw puzzle, every new bit of information sliding another piece into place until we're finally able to see the whole of Ciel's relationship with Sebastian. The final picture it forms is breathtaking -- dark-edged, surprisingly romantic, and layered with symbolism. This is absolutely a must-read.

"Eternity" by Xenobia (NC-17)

Another week, another late rec. *headdesk* One of these days I'll get my act together.

Title: Eternity
Fandom: Kuroshitsuji | Black Butler
Pairings: Sebastian/Ciel, William/Grell, with brief Sebastian/Grell and hints of William/Grell/Undertaker
Categories: Future fic, first time, creature fic
Length: Epic (127,208 words)
Warnings: Technically underage, although the relationship between Ciel and Sebastian remains platonic until Ciel is 17.

Author on AO3:  Xenobia

Summary: Ciel awakens to his new life filled with questions that only his butler can answer for him.

Review: After the end of the Kuroshitsuji II anime, Ciel and Sebastian are both adjusting to Ciel's transformation and the changed terms of their contract. Ciel struggle to embrace his new life, clinging to the remnants of his humanity even while moving on from his identity as the Earl Phantomhive. For his part, Sebastian remains one hell of a butler, mentoring Ciel through his transition even as he wrestles with his own conflicted feelings for Ciel and for his changed role in their contract. Meanwhile, Will and Grell are trying to track down a dangerous supernatural killer, with some surprising help from the Undertaker.

"Eternity" is technically a sequel to an earlier Sebastian/Grell PWP. Although you don't need to read it to understand the story, the casual Sebastian/Grell relationship developed in the prequel does carry into the first part of "Eternity" -- much to the chagrin of Ciel and William. However, the main pairings in this story are definitely Sebastian/Ciel and William/Grell. For me, the slow-burn romance between Sebastian and Ciel is the highlight of this story. As Ciel physically matures, he finds himself dealing with a newfound attraction to his butler, leading to all sorts of adorably awkward UST. I appreciate that Xenobia gives them the space to grow into their feelings for each other and the physical aspect of the relationship. I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed the plot with the shinigami. Undertaker is a gem in this story, and I loved watching him interact with Grell and William. The killer they are trying to track down also has an interesting backstory with a satisfying link to Undertaker's past.

While this story is not as polished as I'd usually prefer (the prose could use some tightening, and the plot loses some focus near the end), it's a good read nonetheless. I've enjoyed it a few times now, and definitely recommend it.

Author's Summary:
Cloud is the Planet's greatest weapon, and if he can't fix old wrongs and battles then he may end up being the means by which it all ends (again).

Review:
I adore FF7 fic. I even more adore the entire time traveling trope that the FF7 fandom uses with complete abandon (seriously, you turn around and there's another one! [honestly, I wish there were more so I have more to read]). It is rare, however, that you find a FF7 time travel fic that is long and complete and good. This fills all three of those!

You start off with the planet dying, which is a main staple in a lot of FF7 time travel fics. Then, of course, said planet catapults Cloud back into time. Except a lot of fics where you start off with Cloud as a cadet, you have Cloud as the kind of invisible guy who hangs around Sephiroth as a child. Which is less creepy than I'm making it sound. Um.

But, seriously, Cloud meets Sephiroth as a child due to the planet being all screwy--a Sephiroth who is experimented on, who is treated as a subject, and who has no real positive guidance. Enter Cloud who isn't all mentally there a lot of the time (the planet isn't exactly the benevolent presence it is in a lot of other fics), but who eventually sees Sephiroth as this child with a horrible life and Cloud grows protective.

Then there's another shift. Cloud is taken away, Sephiroth grows up, and things change. Cloud is determined that events won't follow the same path as his last lifetime, but life is both hard and unexpected. Not everything works out, but there are bright spots along the way. Events grow truly epic--it's not about just a handful of people, it's about saving an entire world that hurts just as much as it helps. Everything grows complicated and nothing is easy. Terrible, terrible things happen. And yet there's still people striving to make the best of things.

The author takes the idea of time travel FF7 fic and makes it their own. A lot of the fics can feel the same after a while, but this goes in original and interesting directions. It's long and very plotty--the romance is there, but much later on and it never takes over the storyline. It's just good and such a well worth it read.

Summary: In which events in Beacon Hills go rather differently from the start, and a Beauty and the Beast (ish) story ensues. (Scott is not a teacup and no one sings about their feelings.)

Review: After writing up my rec for "What I Did On My Summer Vacation" last week, I was shocked to discover that another of my favorite actual wolf!Derek Hale stories had not been recced here yet. Naturally, I had to fix that.

"The Boy and the Beast" starts off much the same way as the show itself, with a body turning up in the woods. But this time, the body belongs to Peter. The sheriff is trying to track down Derek and Laura, who went missing around the same time their uncle died. So naturally, Stiles decides to "help" by searching for the two of them in the woods. In the dark. By himself. It's not really a surprise when Stiles falls through the rotten floorboards of the old Hale house, managing to injure and trap himself at the same time . . . it is a surprise when a wolf turns up to help him.

If you're a fan of hurt/comfort, as I am, this story will leave you more-than-satisfied. [livejournal.com profile] dsudis describes Stiles's injury in a way that's almost visceral. We feel his pain and desperation, and his overwhelming relief at Derek's appearance. We also feel the joy he finds in his friendship with Derek. In this universe, Scott has managed both to make it onto the lacrosse team and get a date with Allison without werewolf powers, leaving Stiles a little more alone than he is in canon. With Derek similarly alone and grieving, the two of them naturally gravitate towards each other. Even though Derek spends most of this story as a wolf (for reasons that gradually become clear), that doesn't impede his ability to form a deep friendship with Stiles. [livejournal.com profile] dsudis does a masterful job of conveying Derek's emotions and thoughts without dialogue -- in this case, actions really do speak louder than words. The way the story deals with relationships is another of its strengths. While Stiles is thrilled to have found "a secret magical friend in the woods," Derek complicates his life. Trying to keep Derek a secret means lying to his dad and Scott. The friendship between Scott and Stiles is another strength in this story, as is the relationship between Stiles and his dad. This is a more parental sheriff than I've seen in a lot of Teen Wolf stories, but it felt like a realistic interpretation of the character to me.

One part hurt/comfort, one part werewolf mystery, and one part slow-burn romance, "The Boy and the Beast" has a little bit of something for nearly any mood. Even if you're not in the Teen Wolf fandom, I encourage you to give it a try -- this AU doesn't require a lot of canon knowledge. Don't get intimidated by the high word count, either. This story is engaging straight through till the end. And if you're like me, once you reach it, you'll probably turn right back to the beginning and start again!

Review: The theme this week is your favorite cliché. In the Teen Wolf fandom, that would probably have to be Actual Wolf Derek Hale. A number of stories have the Beacon Hills werewolves turning into actual wolves, rather than the beta form they assume on the show. Not only is "What I Did On My Summer Vacation" a fantastic example of Actual Wolf Derek Hale, but it also reinterprets a number of other Teen Wolf clichés in a fresh and unexpected way.

In "What I Did On My Summer Vacation," Stiles's dad takes a new job while Stiles is off at college, as the sheriff of a tiny town called Beacon Hills. When summer vacation rolls around, Stiles visits his dad in his new home. It doesn't take him long to realize that there's a lot more to Beacon Hills than meets the eye -- and that his dad knows something he isn't telling him.

Where to even start with this story? Like I said, much of its charm is how it reinterprets fandom clichés. Grimm takes that "Beacon Hills is a magnet for the supernatural" cliché and runs with it. This is a Beacon Hills where everybody is in the know except for Stiles, and I loved seeing how the open secret of the supernatural subtly changed the town and its characters. It was also hilarious to see the sheriff lying to Stiles about werewolves, rather than the other way around! This story also portrays Laura Hale differently than a lot of fanfiction does. She's not the alpha here, just a beta struggling with the loss of her family. That vulnerability gives her a touch of realism I don't always see in Teen Wolf stories, where Laura is often painted as a 100% confident bad-ass leader. I also love the mythology and the magic system in this story. And of course, I loved the romance between Derek and Stiles! It's slower than most slow-burn stories, with Derek spending much of it as a wolf. But I loved their gradually-built friendship and trust, as well as their occasional stumbling blocks.

Review:
Duo, a mortician working the graveyard (hah) shift, comes across a dead body... that isn't quite dead. It's a cool premise for a deliciously creepy little Heero/Duo fic. The author has really done a great job creating a horror movie atmosphere; every scene takes place at night, or in a storm at night, or in dingy little apartments that never see the sunlight. This, the authors mastery of description, and the fact that it all happens over the same night, give this fic a dreamlike - or nightmarish - quality that really suits its creepy overtones.

Every character seems a little off, with Duo driven slightly insane by his work, and Heero the socially awkward character we know and love with an extra dose of supernatural creepiness. Their interactions are both cute and creepy, as a self-hating Heero fights his nature and Duo, exasperated and scared by turns, befriends him through pure brute force. There are also great moments of dark humour and even some sweetness, nicely offset by the horror movie style of the setting.

Review:
One of my best beloved series/fandoms is the Twelve Kingdoms (go read/watch!). To my eternal regret and disappointment, the author has not resolved the events after the last book (and it has been years, okay, I check every so often to see if maybe she'll clear up that GIANT CLIFFHANGER and nope, not yet [unless she did it in the recently published short stories, but I doubt that]), so in lieu of canon resolution I turn to fic.

And this fic is wonderful.

It's the resolution we've never had. It's Taiki and Risai on an adventure to find Gyousou and free Tai from the usurper king. It's Taiki quietly guilty and sad and so very convinced that he's not a true kirin anymore. All of the characters were spot on and the events that spread out before you feel as if it could actually happen in that way. It's the conclusion that's desperately wanted and hasn't quite yet come.

It just feels so satisfying to read.

Chihiro tasted the rain cool and sweet on her lips, and remembered, fleetingly, what clouds had tasted like as she flew through them.

Review:
I swear this fandom has some of the prettiest writing.

I love Yuletide because it gives me fics like this that I just sort of sigh over and clutch to my chest and wish could just go on and on. Promises Made takes place in the future, where Chihiro lives her day to day life, but still remembers Haku and is still connected to the spirit world in mostly little ways. She's pragmatic, but she keeps an eye out for spirits and there's this dreamy quality to the entire fic that touches her, but doesn't overwhelm her.

I wouldn't say that Chihiro is waiting for Haku to come back, but they do have a promise to see one another again and it's important even if she doesn't let it define her. I think that's an important distinction and one I'm glad that the author made.

And it's so pretty. So very very pretty. It's not even--it's in the descriptions. It's in the way Haku smiles with his eyes and the way that clouds taste. It's the promise of more that kind of hovers in the background without overwhelming you. At the end I'm left with this brimming of feelings that just make me want to gush and leave me wanting more.

It's crazy because it's not like a lot happens. But there's a sort of internal pull in the chest and--I have no idea. Read it. It's lovely and fits the world of Spirited Away so well.

Review:
Spirited Away is definitely one of my most favorite movies ever, and every once in a while I find myself dipping a toe back into the fandom. This story was written a few years ago, but it remains one of my favorites--in part because it's written so well and in part because it kind of makes my heart squeeze every time I read it.

It's not a drama-and-action-everywhere! sort of fic. Rather, it's mostly about Haku. A Haku who has married Chihiro and still misses his river. It's about spirits and their place in a world that's increasingly faithless, and how some adapt and others don't. It's about a Haku who struggles as a dragon, a god, in a human body, but does so with nary a complaint because he fiercely loves Chihiro and she makes everything worth it (my heart you guys).

It's a lower key sort of fic. It mostly explores Haku's evolution and the way he interacts with the human world he has chosen to live in (while still interacting with the spirits around him). And it's so beautifully written. The descriptions, the turns of phrases--all of these set the tone and make you really believe that this is actually the future for Haku and Chihiro. Life isn't perfect for the both of them (for one, Haku can barely hold a job, ha), but it's worth it to them. I just sort of helplessly smile.

And Haku's a dragon. A dragon in a human body (most of the time), but still a dragon. His mannerisms and quirks are spot on, as are Chihiro's. Basically: Everything is believable! And gorgeous! And if you liked Spirited Away you'll love this!

Stiles makes for a charismatic and adorable fox, but to me the heart of this story is the way his exuberance and straight forward joy transforms Derek's grief and loneliness.

I love the dialogue (both silent and spoken aloud), the forest imagery, the magic realism, Derek's solitude, Stiles' slow transformation from actual fox to much more, and the resulting changes in the way he and Derek relate to one another. The characterizations are great, and even when he's still strictly a fox, Stiles' enthusiastic affection wears away at Derek's stoic self-exile. I like pretty much everything about this, and I've read it more than once. It's got loss and love and honesty; it's well written, and it's a great balance between melancholy and funny moments.

Author's Summary: Where Mycroft is an angel, Sherlock is a demon, and John is still John.

Review:
Sherlock's a demon, but although he's done some pretty nasty things in his past, he's lived so long that he's bored now. He and Mycroft, "know that nothing they do really matters, in the grand scheme of things. One day there will be a final battle, where Heaven and Hell will compete for their final victory. And it will be a really big deal, they're sure. But until that day comes, both sides are in and will remain in a holding pattern..."

Enter John, who fascinates Sherlock despite the inconvenience of pretending to be human around him. John's surprised that Sherlock believes in God, but what he doesn't know is that there's no faith involved.

There are cases, souls on the line, secrets revealed, and Moriarty's games. Etothepii sets everything in a believable grey area where demons are damned but capable of emotional attachment, and where angels and demons can secretly work together. The relationship between Mycroft and Sherlock is very well done; I love that they rely on one another even as they argue over which side gets whose souls. It's very in character for both of them. Actually, everything about the fusion slots seamlessly into place (though you don't need to have read Good Omens to understand and enjoy). And Sherlock's feelings for John and his trust in him are the heart of the story.

Summary: Kris owns an inter-dimensional cafe! Kris doesn't know he owns an inter-dimensional cafe.

Review: This is a fun twist on the Coffee House AU.Kris is so completely oblivious. Adam, Katy, and Alli are all awesomely amused and amusing. And there is enough world-building to keep the story from an overabundance of fluff. So consider taking a little while to read it and get some wonderful laughs.

You can read this even if you're not familiar with the fandom.

Fandom: Criminal Minds
Pairing: Aaran Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Reid/BAU, Reid/Blackwolf
Categories: Amnesia (not really), Creature/Wing, Drama, Family, Romance, Supernatural
Length: Long (~19,000 words)
Warnings: Promiscuous!Reid

Author's Website: FF.net But it's better if you just go to her livejournal, it's more complete. :)

Author's Summary: Part 1: Once you have one, you have to get the whole set.
Part 2: Be careful what you wish for . . .
part 3: "Tell me, Aaron Hotchner, do you believe in faeries?"
Part 4: Hotch placed the sword carefully on the table and turned to Reid. “When did I enter the Twilight Zone?” he asked, his voice gentle.

Review: I fell in love with this story from the very first paragraph. It's different from most of the other Criminal Minds fanfiction I've read with the supernatural twist nebula99 has put into it. She has wonderfully created this world that runs without our knowledge, the world of the Daoine Sidhe. You can just imagine her original characters being a part of the canon characters. Spencer was characterized beautifully both as the Spencer we all know and love and as Caomhin, half-faery.

Hotch and Spencer's relationship here is wonderfully crafted. I love how accepting Hotch is of Spencer's Faery nature, his promiscuousity and well, generally, everything Spencer. :)
