The Pure and Simple Truth by lettered (G)

After 2 years reccing weekly, it's time for me to go (though I'll be around as a mod for a while). I've loved sharing favorite stories at ER. Thanks for giving my recs a look. I've saved a good one for last. If you haven't already read it, I hope you enjoy.

Title: The Pure and Simple Truth
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Eventual Harry/Draco; a cast of pretty much everybody who went to school together and lived through the war

Length: Epic (65,482)
Warnings: None

Author's summary: Harry, Draco, and Hermione go to a pub. Harry, Draco, and Pansy go to a pub. Harry, Draco, Pansy, and Hermione go to a pub. Harry, Draco, Hermione and Ron go to a pub. Harry, Draco, Hermione, Ron, and Pansy―you guessed it―go to a pub. I could go on. In fact, I did. Harry, Draco, Hermione, Pansy, Ron, Blaise, Luna, Goyle, Neville, and Theodore Nott go to a pub. In various combinations.

OR My Summary: In my initial comment to the author in 2012 I offered my own, fairly biased summary:
Brilliant exploration of the heart of people - individually, in pairs, in groups, in society, in the wake of war and throughout the course of bloody history. When you think you know everything it has to offer, this story unfolds into more: more humor, more revelations, more warmth and understanding. It's larger than its word count, but it sings along. And yes, it may read in some ways as practically gen, but in any way that counts, it's a steam train running toward mutual affection and respect, and that's more than enough romance. Also, it's hysterical.

Review:
In life, the truth is often anything but simple, and that's the beauty of this fic. lettered knows everyone has their own beliefs and experiences, and that celebrating that instead of fighting it makes for a feast of friendships, ideas and debate. And yet for all its philosophical implications, this is an emotional and immediate story. It's warm and funny and sharp.

Harry's in character, never one to over think his plans, but he's not the glue holding this social circle together - not even the center, since it doesn't seem to have one. But it's his point of view we get, so the way he learns and changes is central to us, and through him we see Draco's growth as well. To me, in addition to everything else it has to offer, this is a romance, despite how long it takes them to come around to just the start of that - or actually because of how long it takes. They don't get pressed together or rushed in any way. Their post-war journey of discovering who they are now and who they could be is both required and incredibly good to read.

And I'll never be able to include why everyone else is so fantastic, funny, thoughtful, sometimes hurting, and always individual. I'll just say briefly that I'm a Luna fan, and she shines here. Pansy is so clearly drawn she could walk off the page (if she weren't too busy looking at her nails), and her hysterical deadpan delivery covers hurts you couldn't begin to untangle. Plus her description of Draco's relationship with his father is dead on. Blaise, of all people, works as the lynchpin; I'm not sure the story would get to the heart of things without him. ...And there are so many more terrific characterizations.

The Pure and Simple Truth has a lot to offer the heart and the head. It sticks with you long after you're done reading.

Title: Mountain Sound
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Pairing: Derek/Stiles
Categories: AU, child emissaries, actual-wolf werewolves, drama, angst, romance
Length: Medium (2,454 words)
Warnings: Brief mention of past character deaths

Author on LJ: NA
Author Website: faviconhayesgeneration

Author's Summary:The child emissaries usually never live past their fifth year with the wolves. The boy sitting on the tree stump can't be more than eight summers old, maybe less, and he has big, dull eyes that land on Derek first when they break the clearing. He doesn't even flinch; Derek does.

Review:
I usually go for fics with a lot of dialogue, and there's not much in the way of that here, but there's an old world Grimm's tales tone to this, and some thoughtful, spare writing that goes along with that. Stiles is an orphan from a village with a Druid medicine woman and townspeople who're wary of wolves. The werewolves rarely take human form, and emissary children routinely die young, "quietly burned out with earth-bound magic as old as their species."

I'm not sure of all the details of the truce between the wolves and the village, and I can't say why Stiles doesn't speak for years on end. But that's because the focus is more on the feel of this world then the facts of it. There's tradition and inevitability, and of course Stiles manages to be the exception to everyone's expectations (probably even his own). This is told from Derek's point of view, so we know more about how Derek feels and how the years bring him to the point of loving Stiles.

Title: Wheels Of Fire (The Official Autobiography of Harry Potter)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Categories: EWE, Post-war, bad writer Harry, good writer Draco, humor
Length: Medium (9,468)
Warnings: Brief mention of past character deaths

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] captain_tulip

Author's summary: Harry's been wanting to publish an autobiography for years; only problem is, he can't write for peanuts. Enter Draco Malfoy: broke, surly and the best ghost writer in the business.

Review:
There's more to this snappy story than just humor; Draco is alone and seriously poor at the start. But the tone isn't about angst or Harry saving Draco... Well, wait, I guess without it being his original intention, Harry does save Draco. And Draco certainly saves Harry from embarrassing the hell out of himself.

Okay, starting over... When I'm reading this story, it has me smiling and admiring Draco's tangents and Harry's stubbornness. What we get to read of Harry's writing is so fabulously awful, and the publisher's attempts to not laugh him out of the office are just right. I also like Harry not wanting to be full of himself, but failing to understand how no one could want to publish a book by the Chosen One!? Draco's point of view is even funnier as he imagines different ways his first meeting with Potter might go. Especially since Harry has no idea it's Draco he's meeting. Lastly, the final two lines are perfect.

It's such a lively read that the more serious aspects just lend it a bit of weight without ever slowing it down.

Title: here at the end of all things

Pairing: Derek/Stiles
Categories: AU, post Were-war refugee camp, hurt/comfort
Length: Medium (4,145 words)
Warnings: Mention of past character deaths

Author on LJ: NA
Author Website: favicon coffeeinallcaps

Author's Summary: Chris carries the kid in on a rainy afternoon.

“Found him just outside the perimeter,” he says as he lowers the limp body onto one of the mattresses. “I’m not sure he’ll make it.”

Derek takes a look at the kid’s deathly pale skin, the black edges of his blunt fingernails, the long ragged gash running down his side, caked with dried blood and dirt, and for some reason he thinks, he’ll make it, all right.

Review:
I loved several thing about this: the world building (especially the with how much coffeeinallcaps packs into 4k words), the way Derek is able to make a difference in a place where losing almost everyone is a common tragedy, and Stiles' mistrustful and less talkative personality following his father's death (and almost dying himself). In a turnaround, Derek seems more grounded and emotionally open than Stiles, though Stiles does become more outgoing and snarky as he heals and joins the camp.

That said, if you like your stories to take every possibility to its final conclusion and go all out with emotional declarations, this isn't that sort of fic. It's very much a story for me, though. I like stoic characters and angst to really make sense for the plot, and given everything that's happened, they certainly do here, because you're dropped into the wake of a Were-war that's left a huge portion of the population dead. Stiles is unconscious and near death, and Derek decides to take care of him. That leads to the beautifully understated progression of their relationship, told from Derek's point of view.

Review:
I seem to be in a quidditch art mood, but we could use more art recs on the comm, so I'm going with it! Last week I recced quidditch locker room art, and this week, I'm reccing a less recent favorite with Draco and Harry in quidditch gear, sharing an airborne kiss while riding the same broom. The artist has a lot of great work; I love their use of shadow in some and the luminous quality of their light. Here, the boys are lit up in gold that glows from beneath in a style that reminds me of stained glass, though with finer, more detailed lines. There's a radiant sense of joy and optimism, and beautifully expressive faces and body language. One of my all time favorites.

Review:
I love both the composition and coloring of this realistic digital art created this year. The tones are mostly warm and dark with quidditch gear and brooms in the background. That's contrasted with the almost pearlescent lightness of the shirtless pair in the foreground. The boots are beautifully detailed, as are the little hurts from quidditch scrapes and the discoloration on Harry's neck that's more likely a hickey than anything that happened on the pitch. Draco's hair is a work of art on its own, and the placement of Harry's hand with its bloody knuckles is perfection.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lomonaaeren
Author on AO3: Lomonaaeren

Author's summary: Physical separation is possible for Harry and Draco. Mental separation is not.

Review:
More than any other Harry/Draco story, this is the one that's head-canon for me, because Lomonaaeren spotlights the resentment that lies between them, plus their differences in personality and beliefs, yet Harry and Draco still move from antagonism to truce to reliance and finally understanding.

They find common ground in their shared trauma from the war. And at the heart of their transition is the curse on Narcissa. It leaves Draco open and brings out Harry's drive to act. After that, any guardedness Draco feels is gone, and what's left is Harry's emotional upheaval. With no Voldemort to defeat, he's facing up to his neglectful childhood, his adulthood and his sexuality all at once.

I found this story uplifting. Without sweeping anything under the carpet, it pushes inevitably toward connection and fierce protectiveness. Though there are setbacks, each letter moves through and past obstacles until there's nothing left but the two of them.

Title: A Very Sherlock Musical
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Categories: Musical AU
Length: Medium (11,980 words)
Warnings: None

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] flawedamythyst
Author Websites: favicon flawedamythyst

Author's Summary: So, you know how musicals are set in a world where people just burst into song every five minutes, and everyone around them automatically knows to join in with the tune and choreography? This fic is set in that world.

John finds it extremely frustrating that Sherlock won't sing their theme song with him.

Not Season 3-compliant.

Review:
Despite the premise, this is too smart to be just cute or cracky. It's funny and often touching, like Buffy's "Once More With Feeling." Except here, instead of being temporary, shared music is a fact of life. flawedamythyst gives us real a sense of that with lines like:
Sherlock spared him a glance. “You're late,” he observed.

John made a face. “Got caught up in a street ensemble of It's Bloody Raining Again,"

And, upon shooting the serial killer from A Study in Pink to the swell of rushing music:
"[John] wanted to blame the music, but everyone knew that didn't count as a defence in court."

This is basically canon compliant until the end of season 2, but with added issues brought about by the uncontrollable need to break into song. John is confused and hurt by Sherlock's unwillingness to sing with him. Then he realizes Sherlock has never sung a duet or offered backup vocals on a family chorus or police song. The author focuses on these issues and less on the details of cases we've already seen, so I never felt like this was a rehash of the series with something slapped on top. Plus the lyrics are well written; I had no trouble imagining the accompanying tunes to dangerous chases and heartfelt declarations alike.

Author's summary: Draco Malfoy is like all the other Survivors of the disaster -- except for one called Harry Potter.

Review:
Here's a classic that I just realized has never been recced here. Draco begrudgingly attends group meetings with Hermione, Neville, Romilda, Fred and others who were victims of an accident and can't remember anything about their pasts. Harry is the oddest, with a crazy story about how they used to be wizards and witches.

It's a unique plot that makes Draco good friends with Hermione, and, to some extent, with all the survivors. But strange things happen whenever any of them get angry or afraid, and Harry may seem crazy, but he's offering a bit of proof. The problem is, the way Harry tells it, all the victims seem to have been friends with everyone but Draco.

There's a lot to love in this beautifully crafted fic, with Draco unhappy about what Harry's story says about him, and with the way things seem familiar and yet not. There's a need for everyone to figure out who they are now, and there's a growing closeness between Harry and Draco, a relationship that probably wouldn't have happened without this new start.

Author's summary: There's a run down theater and a run down magician with three ravens. He has one impossible trick. His new assistant has a lot of questions, but no answers of her own.

Review:
Loki is a solitary Las Vegas magician with a secret and an angsty, twist-on-canon past with his family. Darcy pushes her way into the role of his assistant, and ends up becoming more.

There's an understated beauty to Loki and Darcy's relationship, and in fact to the writing throughout. Vera creates slightly melancholy tone that's brightened by Loki's wry sense of humor and Darcy's frequent quips. It's also made warmer by the deepening connection between two people who have no one else to turn to anymore. The dialogue is terrific throughout; the progression of the relationship works well, and the gothic nature of a rundown theatre, the ravens of myth, and the old-school magic tricks give this a unique feel.

At the heart of it, two lonely people find one another, and their futures look brighter than their pasts.

Author's Summary:
“Holy shit,” you whisper. Dave joins you at the window.
There are no stars left in the sky. Nothing but blackness and a faint soap bubble sheen.
“Is that a dream bubble?” Dave says.
And then it swallows you.

Now with an illustration by Renaris.

Review:
Dave and Kartkat get swallowed by a dream bubble and try to survive snow, lava, and Alternia's undead as they move through memories. Along the way, Karkat is blinded by Dave's dickishness decision not to give up his glasses, and Karkat has to depend on Dave to get him through.

Messageredacted is one of my favorite authors, and this time we get a hopscotch game of shifting lands, danger, banter, anger, vulnerability and suspense, all without slowing the action or seeming the least disjointed. This rolls along, and the dream bubble is the catalyst for a meaningful connection between two guys who'd rather lose a limb than open themselves to hurt or embarrassment.

There's a lovely illustration by Renaris; the dialogue is fantastic, and characterizations are spot on.

Title: The Conquering of Harry Potter('s Virginity)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Draco (with background Pansy/Neville)
Categories: Humor, Romance, Fluff, Virgin!Draco, Virgin!Harry, 1 year post Hogwarts, EWE
Length: Medium (8,377)
Warnings: None

Author's summary: The prompt says it best: after Draco acquires the knowledge that Harry Potter has had a very sad (non-existent really) sex life, he sees it as his personal duty to be the Saviour's hero for once and show him how it's done. And Draco is totally the right person for that.. although he may not actually have had sex before either.

Review:
Never has a plan been so unnecessary, but Draco has come up with the 6 phases required to save Harry, because, "If Potter—who must receive dozens of offers a day—couldn't get any action, then clearly he was completely helpless on that front. His virginity was a foe he could not vanquish... He needed Draco!"

There's great pacing and dialogue. There's humor and affection and awkward sex, plus some smoother-than-smooth sexy talk like, “Get ready for more sex and some mushy pasta.” There's everything you could want in a feel good fic.

You're probably better off skipping the details and heading over to this story, which is an instant rec - a temporarily anon. offering today from the [livejournal.com profile] dracotops_harry Fest. But if you need more convincing, I'm happy to gush a little more...

The author gets every scrap of humor and good feeling from the premise by giving us a smitten Draco I particularly adore - the kind who gets an idea in his head and completely misunderstands anything that doesn't align with it. He's got great energy and conviction for this Herculean task that...    Okay he's not actually going to need to work very hard. But there's no point in trying to talk to him about anything that isn't phases 1 - 6. Pansy has tried, and it got her exactly nowhere.

Harry is brilliant as well, and his initial shy and hopeful uncertainty is the kind most people get when they have feelings for someone and don't know whether they'll be returned.

Title: kyle wei, tree whisperer
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Pairing: Gen - Harley, Kyle, Danny (cameo appearance by Stiles)

Length: Medium (6,590 words)
Warnings: Mentions of canon character death (like Matt Daehler)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] magneticwave
Author Website: favicon magneticwave

Author's Summary: Harley has known Kyle Wei basically forever, just like everybody else born and bred in Beacon Hills, but she’d say that their friendship really begins the morning that Kyle comes by the BHHS newspaper office to ask Harley to help him save his tree girlfriend from Lydia Martin’s patio.

Review:
I'm in love with this new fic. In high school I had a thing for the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which focuses on 2 minor characters from Hamlet, showing us everything that happened to them offstage in the classic, while Hamlet and Ophelia get minor roles. It's a strange, funny perspective.

Here we have 2 very minor Beacon Hills characters in the spotlight. Especially Harley, a girl who was Stiles and Scott's friend early on, with a few lines. Kyle Wei is an unnamed student who had a tree sniffing moment at Lydia's birthday party in season 2 - the one with the wolfsbane spiked punch.

Jump to season 3 and Danny acting like you'd have to be an idiot not to know about werewolves.

Which brings us, finally, to the beauty of this fic. It's funny with great dialogue - smart and lively writing throughout - with a broader perspective than canon and an often irreverent-in-its-practicality take on season 2. Pretty much everyone born in Beacon Hills knows about the supernatural forces behind ongoing attacks and deaths, and rolls their eyes at the idea that Stiles or Scott or Jackson might think they're hiding much from their fellow students. Harley's in the thick of it, editing the school newspaper with the help of a list of synonyms for "unexplained" and the rule that the paper is going to remain "baffled" as long as the sheriff's department's baffled.

excerpt )

There's more. I haven't even gotten to Kyle Wei and his relationship with the potted tree on Lydia's patio. But if I haven't made you want to take a look at this by now, I've failed utterly.

--

I try not to rec the same authors very often, and this is the first time I've recced one twice in a month. In my defense, I didn't know magenticwave had something else this sharp up their sleeve.

Author's summary: When Merlin and Arthur find themselves in a tight spot, they get help from an unexpected source.

Review:
An older Arthur visits Camelot from the future to defeat some of Morgana's beasts... and to turn Merlin's world upside down, apparently.

It's not often I'm this happy about a story in which the magic reveal and several other important events happen 'off stage', but in their place, we get big revelations for Merlin. Present day Arthur (by which I mean Merlin's present in canon era) has been growing more wary of magic, and Merlin thinks he knows where it's all heading. But he'll be very surprised by future King Arthur in more ways than one.

excerpt )

I loved the way Merlin imagines the worst about the situation, only to find that he feels closer to future Arthur than to the one he's known. I also liked that it eventually improves how he sees 'his' present day Arthur. There's humor too; Arthur doesn't like to be told what to do, even when it's his own self... maybe especially when it's himself. And Merlin is a joy here - very in character.

You can love this for Lydia on a mission or for the fix-it post episode 23. Or you can straight up love it for the writing. It's lyrical but never vague or distracting; it's beautiful but still down to earth. Check out the opening paragraph...

excerpt )

In her grief, Lydia takes matters into her own hands, and she'll make one step follow another until she's done. I believe that methodical drive of her, and the well-crafted extra edge to it when friendship's not something she'll give up. It's especially clear in the line, "She doesn’t need to kill Malia Tate," which gives us an idea of how dark this might have gotten if Lydia's plan required it.

A short read, but well worth it.

Author's summary: The war is over and Draco is alone, fighting demons of a different nature. This is obviously an AU by now. Written after "The Half-Blood Prince" came out.

Review:
Here's a classic that somehow hasn't been recced at ER before. I'm glad I get to add it, because pir8fancier's story packs a lot of thought and emotion, tackling grief and serious mental illness while letting us see glimpses of humor in Draco's matter-of-fact point of view. For instance, there's the absurdity of Draco believing himself to be insane, so he ignores the very real Harry, who he thinks is a hallucination.
excerpt )

I enjoyed the way Draco contrasts the care and attention he receives from the Harry he thinks is a hallucination, with the abuse he's sure he'd receive from the "real" Harry he imagines. His fear of the outside world is stark and believable.

Draco takes small steps toward acknowledging a deeply concerned Harry, but he's got a long way to go, so the friendship, care and plan to get him some help are much needed. There's romantic interest on both sides as well, though nothing physical can come of it until Draco's mental health improves.

As [livejournal.com profile] capitu (who keeps an extensive, categorized list of HD recs at [livejournal.com profile] my_drarry_recs) says, "This story is beautiful. And you're going to fall in love with both Harry & Draco, and the author."

Author's Summary: Five sweeps after a powerful young psionic yellow-blood named Sollux Captor disappeared from his respiteblock, a certain violet-blood recruit boards the prestigious service of the Condesce's foremost battleship after taking out the )(eiress. That certain violet-blood proceeds to fuck everything up.

Review:
I'm fascinated by helmsman AUs but often too much of a wuss to read them. This one has its share of body horror and disassociation, but there's a steady progression toward Sollux 's recovery and bid for freedom that keeps this well within my limits. Plus Eridan is so turn-on-a-dime sulky, hopeful, selfish and heroic, that his campaign to return Sollux to being more than the ship's operating system is a joy to read. Partial success, paradoxically, makes things less bearable for Sollux as he comes to terms with the terrible reality of his situation. But the other trolls become more involved when there's an attempt to reach rebel leader Karkat to both warn him that the Empire has discovered the rebel base on Veridia and to make plans to free Sollux.

The characterizations are all beautifully handled; Sollux at the beginning is (rightly) more computer than troll, and the progression of his personality and subsequent feelings are bang on. Even characters like Equius and Karkat who have much smaller parts are just right. In fact the only problem I had-- and maybe I've missed some reasoning -- was that I didn't buy the rebels staying on Veridia. Granted, they're not sure they're talking to Sollux, but there are only 2 options: either the warning about Veridia comes from a friend, in which case they should leave, or it comes from an enemy who knows their location, in which case they should still leave. That aside, I had a great time reading this. It's got some beautiful character development, relationship building, action, and suspense.

Plus Potter's at Grimmauld Place, and Draco doesn't like him any better than at school.

Potter, oddly, seems to want to be near him, though. Weasley's being weird, too. And the strangeness intensifies with the vivid, sexual dreams Draco is having.

This is a long time favorite of mine. It's got suspense, great Spy!Draco pov, his unfolding relationship with Harry, romance, and is very nicely all of its NC-17.

The less said before you read, the better, and you'll understand why when you read it. So I'll stop here, but if you enjoy war era drama, you don't want to miss this one.

Author's Summary: “Daevit Stride, at your service,” he drawls. “Y’know, while we’re being so very courteous and polite in the course of these here introductions.” He kicks a foot up at you and you can see the cholerbear trap clamped around his leg, teeth sunk in through sneaker and jeans all the way to flesh. There’s a glint in the ragged depths of the shredded denim that you really, really hope isn’t bone. “Lend a hand, buddy?”

Review:
Dave's still brash and rambling as Daevit the troll. He's got a cholerbear trap dug into his leg, so he may not be at his most obnoxiously charming, but he keeps up the bravado when a bored, Wi-Fi deprived Sollux wanders out and finds him helpless in the grass near Aradia's dig site. Aradia's sweet and badass; Sollux is the smartass who will risk his life for someone he met today.

What you get is some prime hurt/comfort, dramatic rescue attempts, and calling an end to domestic violence (with Bro, who's an awful mix of life-threateningly abusive and determined to keep Daevit with him).

Even more importantly, you get roachpatrol's as-always-stellar dialogue and snarky details that make you feel like you're there... at Aradia's hive... in "The Great Lower Than The Great Mid South Continent Plains But Still Higher Than The Lower South Continent Plains Plains."

Summary: Stiles is a cock tease and has no idea.

The alpha pack was nothing like what Derek expected.

First of all, they had zero interest in fighting Derek for his territory. "I have an infinity pool," Brandon said loftily. "You basically haunt this busted up house and live in an abandoned train car."

"It's easily protected," Derek said defensively.

"From eighty-year-old men with cancer?" Jake said, stretching out on the porch steps. "Admit it, you're a mess."

Review:
This was written during the hiatus before season 3, and drunktuesdays' vision of an affluent and well adjusted alpha pack who breeze in and make things better just cracked me up. It's the antithesis of every bad thing that happens to Derek and in Beacon Hills. Add to that the pack's immediate response to Stiles, and it becomes a hysterical escalating conflict between a pack that all want to put the moves on Stiles, a jealous Derek, and Stiles, who doesn't even notice when he ratchets up the sexual tension by licking frosting off his wrist. Add a werewolf baby into the mix, and the wolves can't take it anymore without someone popping an artery. Which is good; it gives Derek a chance to accidentally confess his feelings.

The alpha pack have the best lines here. drunktuesdays shows us just how tightly wound they are around Stiles. And Anatsuno, who recorded a podfic of this story, does a terrific job with the dialogue as well. If you haven't listened to it, I highly recommend it!
