Title : These Things Were Promises
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Ritchie!verse)

Categories: Amnesia, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Drama
Length: Epic (53,244 words)
Warnings: Addiction, Mental Health Issues

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch

Summary:
Watson has had to take a brutal course in being honest with himself so nothing Holmes says will ever be a surprise.

Review:
One of the better Ritchieverse Holmes/Watson stories out there, this story has the characterization down perfectly. Holmes' cocaine addiction and Watson's gambling problem are not glossed over as they are in the movies, which makes for quite a bit of angst and drama. The details in the story give it depth and help set a lovely pace so the story doesn't seem rushed. The perfect balance of angst and humor keep the story from becoming overly dark.

Summary:
An obsession that destroys everything it touches.

Review:
(This story is set in the Trio's seventh year of Hogwarts, when Harry, Ron and Hermione are seventeen/eighteen. Pretend Deathly Hallows never happened while reading for simplicity's sake.)

I started reading this fic with the thought of using it for this months theme week. While reading I waffled back and forth as to whether I was actually going to use it or not. By the time I got to the end I knew I had to, not reccing this story is just not possible. Dark!fic usually isn't something I'm willing to read, especially if there is a sad ending, but this story is so well written I'm extremely glad I gave it a chance. The plot is amazing as is the characterization, it's Stockholm Syndrome written perfectly. It's an extremely dark story, but at the same time beautiful and heart-breaking. The story ends with what should be a happy ending, but because of everything that has happened to Hermione she's left feeling empty and heartbroken.

There are some spelling and grammar issues, most of them are in the first few chapters however and can easily be overlooked.

Lynx Series by Vilakins (R)

Title: Lynx Series
Fandom: Blake’s 7
Pairing: Gen with a small bit of non-specific Vila/Soolin at the end
Categories: Drama, Friendship, Post-Canon, Hurt/Comfort
Length: Epic (53,020 words)
Warnings: Torture

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] vilakins
Author Website: Breaking Orbit
Summary: A post-Gauda Prime series following the adventures of the surviving crew and a rebel with the code name Lynx they join up with.

Review:
A rare find in the B7 fandom is a PGP fic that doesn’t ‘fix’ the ending. This one carries on with the crew that survived the fiasco on Gauda Prime. After being rescued they receive medical treatment and a chance to heal, not just physically but emotionally as well.

The series focuses mostly on Vila, which is also fairly rare for a PGP story. It’s a nice change to have a story in which Vila has a chance to be happy. However, Avon, Tarrant and Soolin also face their own pasts and inner demons to begin a healing process as well. By the end of the story Vila is happy and Avon, well maybe not happy, but in a much better frame of mind.

The series isn’t finished, there is one more part yet to be written, but the story does end satisfactorily, if a bit abruptly, with no cliff-hangers or glaring loose ends.

Title : Chasing Daylight
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Buffy/Giles
Categories: Romance, Drama, Post-Canon (Post Chosen)
Length: Medium (9,981 words)
Warnings: N/A

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] littleotter73

Summary: Two years have passed since the final battle with the First. Giles, Dawn, Willow, and Xander have all taken up residence in London while the Slayer battles her inner demons traveling around the world. Can her Watcher convince her she's ready to come home?

Review:
Buffy is hit hard by the destruction of Sunnydale and all the stress of the previous year, then a few weeks later he father dies in a car accident. Buffy, battered and broken and blaming herself for all the deaths, decides to travel the world to try and heal.

The story starts off a bit sad but turns sweet and romantic. Beautiful imagery, the story shows you whats happening instead of simply telling you. All the characterizations very well done and at the same time a bit more mature.

Title: Out Of The Shadows Came A Rose
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Severus/Hermione. Severus/Lucius, Hermione/Severus/Lucius
Categories: Romance, Drama, Post-Canon, Mystery
Length: Epic (85,856 words)
Warnings: MPreg, *the birth is under difficult conditions and quite terrifying, Voyeurism

Author on LJ IJ: http://gingertart50.insanejournal.com/
Author Website: HPFandom

Summary: Molly interferes, Ron is a twit but gets over it, Lucius is reformed (well, a bit), Draco grows up, Ginny is a good friend (apart from recommending the shoes), Harry is a hero and Hermione has fun and spends a lot of time in a library. Snape, meanwhile, considers that he is getting his usual shit deal from fate, although to be fair, he never expected to find a family of his own.

Review:
One of the things I really like about this story is the lack of 'Americanisms' that are so prevalent in HP fic. The pace of the story is good and the dialogue is well done. The characters, aside from Molly, remain in character fairly well. Molly isn't portrayed in a very good light in this one, fyi.

After re-reading this I realized that some of my head-canon for a few of the characters comes from this story.I love finding stories that are done differently than the norm and this story fits the bill nicely. This pairing in particular is generally done with Hermione/Lucius or Hermione/Severus as the focus and later bringing the other in. This one does start with Hermione/Severus, but Severus and Lucius already have a relationship going and the three come up with an interesting arrangement that suits them all.

Review:
A beautifully descriptive story with an intriguing mystery and a a few splashes of humor thrown in. The plot is intricate and not immediately obvious as to what the problem is, let alone the solution. The relationship is slow to build and because of it, quite believable.
