Length: Medium (2493 words)

Summary:

Apparently a bunch of hoodies and a few baseball hats are “not proper winter gear” and telling Bitty that that’s all you have will make him say things like “you’re going to freeze to death” and “you poor sunshine child” and “oh my goodness Chowder don’t you own any boots?”

Review:

Do you like cute boys being cute? Do you like pie? Do you know that hockey is a sport people play?

Do you like quirky, well-developed characters? Do you like expressive art? Do you like witty humor with a dash of drama and a pinch of angst?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, Check, Please! is definitely up your alley. For those of you not already familiar with it, it's a multi-platform webcomic about a gay hockey player from Georgia who plays for the men's hockey team at the fictional Samwell University. He even has a Twitter account (@omgcheckplease) you can actually follow, reacting to events that take place in the comic and fleshing out the universe and characters with humor and panache. I urge you, right now, to go check out Check, Please!. Once you do, come back and read this fic.

Being quite new to the comic, which is only just coming into its own, I've only had a chance to read a few fics since I was first introduced to it all of, what, 5 days ago? But let me tell you, I'm already hooked. Winter Clothes in particular tickles my outsider POV fancy, told from the perspective of Samwell U freshman Chris “Chowder” Chow, a California native unprepared for the oncoming Massachussetts winter. Eric “Bitty” Bittle, a sophomore and the comic's main character and narrator, takes it upon himself to make sure Chowder is appropriately equipped. Jack Zimmermann, the men's hockey team captain, takes it upon himself to tag along.

What ensues is the embodiment of adorable URT, that is, Unresolved Romantic Tension, as observed through the eyes of the incredibly impressionable Chowder, who is canonically something of an adorable little puppy of a boy. But though Chowder may not entirely understand what he's witnessing, the audience certainly does, sighing and face-palming over the cuteness that is Bitty and Jack in proximity to one another.

Fandom: Blake's 7
Pairing: Avon/Blake, Avon & Jenna
Categories: action/adventure, humour, bodyswap, pre-slash
Length: long: 26,692 words
Warnings: Features one scene with a non-graphic threatened/attempted assault, but no real warnings. I'd put this at PG13ish/T rating: nothing you couldn't have seen in the show.

Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Corngold on AO3

Summary: Avon wakes up one morning in someone else's bed. It all goes downhill from there.

Review: This is a bodyswap fic (Avon and Jenna) and an Avon/Blake fic (labelled as het!pre-slash by the author). Avon somehow feels such an unlikely person to bodyswap, with logic and endless sarcasm his foundation, and there's a charm in seeing him deal with this situation. The other bonus of the situation is how much we get to see of Jenna, even though it's told in Avon's perspective, and how the crew view her and Avon differently while they're trying to be each other. Since they're both quite dry and logical characters, it's actually got quite a different feel to how I've seen this trope carried out in the past.

It's so easy to hear all the characters talking in this. It's set at an early point in the series where everyone's had chance to get used to each other but before things get quite so tense in the search for Star One. Avon's sniping and sarcastic (as is a given) but moderately settled with everyone and things between the crew are not too bad. It makes for things being more relaxed than they were most of the time on the show, but that's nice, and there's so much in this that feels so like the Liberator on its happier days. The banter, the alien planets, the scrappy rebel groups, Blake's incongruous optimism and ever charging into danger.

Then there are lines like: Avon’s never realised how ridiculous he looks while he’s sneaking; it’s not a particularly happy discovery. Perhaps Jenna simply does it wrong. and: He’d no idea his body could move like that; when he fights he tends to include more desperate flailing.

Lots of fun, although I did want more at the end.

Title: Point of a Pistol
Fandom: Person of Interest
Pairing: Harold Finch/John Reese
Categories/Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, Pre-Slash, Romance,
Length: Long (25422 words)
Warnings: Character Death: (Root)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek
Author Website: Giddygeek

Summary:

Root returns to claim what's hers.

Review:

One of the aspects of Person of Interest that I dearly love is the slowly evolving relationship between Finch and Reese. They begin as absolute strangers, dependent upon but untrusting of each other. Slowly, ever so slowly, trust and friendship begin to form between them, growing into an unswerving and unbreakable devotion.

Point of a Pistol subtly explores that devotion through Reese's perspective. The reader can see the care that Reese takes with Finch, the bone-deep need to keep Finch safe from danger, exposure, Finch's own workaholic habits, and occasionally even from Reese himself. In return, Finch grants Reese little peeks at those things about himself that he goes well out of his way to hide from the world.

This isn't your standard action/adventure fic. No, it follows more along the lines of the canon itself, moving slowly but deliberately toward moments of frenetic action. It's thoughtful, and thought provoking, and just like canon, deeply invested in the bond of trust and care between the two leads.

Title: Fine Woodworking
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Pairing: Derek/Stiles (pre-slash)
Categories: Angst, emotional hurt/comfort, panic attacks, PTSD, pack, recovery
Length: Medium (2,129 words)
Warnings: Just spoilers for Season 3B

Author on LJ [livejournal.com profile] lolafeist
Author Websites: favicon LolaFeist

Author's Summary: Derek has grown accustomed to listening for the eccentric rhythm of Stiles' heartbeat.

Review:
Season 3B has had some humor, more focus, a Derek who actually looked happy for a second (?!), and a growing sense of suspense around Stiles' missing time, inability to tell waking from sleeping, etc. LolaFeist focuses on the latter, with a Stiles who has deep anxiety issues and post traumatic stress in the imagined aftermath of this season.

Although Derek and Stiles are alone together, the pack is a very much part of the story. We hear how they've tried to feel their way around the gap that holds Stiles apart from them - his panic and his changing moods - and get a sense of what it's costing them.

I love that LolaFeist doesn't ignore the ways hurting can make us a pain in the ass to live with. Derek notes Stiles' manipulation and anger without being drawn in. I also loved the low key way Derek only makes himself available instead of pushing for the outcome he wants; he's got a peacefulness that's needed here. Stiles is far off balance and a long way from moving on, but the end of this story is a turning point that's both subtle and striking. From there you can see the path that could lead Stiles and everyone around him to better days. (And if that's not happy enough, LolaFeist has sketched short peek at how she imagines the future will go in a comment.)

I recced LolaFeist here in 2012 too. She has a way with angst and hurt/comfort, so if you enjoy this, you might also like the rec for Architecture and Authority, a Merlin dystopian AU.

Title: Inertia
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Pairing: Derek/Stiles pre-slash, but reads like Gen for most of it. A line about possible future Cora/Stiles too, which I didn't read to be anything more than growing friendship. --- I feel like I should just do the Facebook thing and say "It's Complicated"
Categories: Post-canon, road trip, drama, angst, post-trauma, nemeton, emotional hurt/comfort, family, friendship
Length: Long (21,608 words)
Warnings: Author's warnings: One panic attack, and brief, non-descriptive references to child abuse/neglect, animal death, and drowning

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bookgodess15
Author Websites: favicon bookgodess15

Author's Summary: The last thing Derek and Cora are expecting to find outside their motel room is a gaunt Stiles Stilinski, lacrosse bag on one shoulder and the weight of the world on the other.

Review:
Here's a road trip with three people who are not entirely sure what the hell they're doing, but they're all hurting and at a loss about how to make things better.

Stiles is fleeing from a post-ice-bath traumatic experience that even he doesn't understand (so it takes a while before we can get the full, angsty story), but though he seems to be the worst off, he's the one who gets Derek and Cora moving again (see title) both literally and figuratively. He's too open and energetic to allow them to keep ignoring their issues.

Derek's been telling himself he's just trying to make Cora happy, but Cora has some serious anger problems. Her temper and Stiles' personality combine to land a hapless Derek in an almost parental role for a while.

There's a lot of suspense surrounding what's gone on between Stiles and his dad. And the heart of this is a great progression in the relationships between these three -- toward more warmth and understanding -- and how it helps each of them move forward. Plus this just reads differently from a lot of Teen Wolf fiction in a way that had me wanting to see where the author would take it.

Author's Summary:
“It’s perfectly logical. We’re bound to be caught at some point together, and as far as I can see there’s no downside to connecting Mr. Warren to Mr. Wren socially. We’ll have an easier time explaining ourselves being together if we’re observed being together, and since you’ve vetoed all of my suggestions for activities that you could take up—“

“I’m not joining a bowling league, Harold,” John says firmly.

Review:
One of my (many) pet peeves is trying to explain shipping to “non-shippers,” because they all seem to operate under this one mistaken assumption: that there is such a thing as a “non-shipper” and that they are one of them. But the truth is, all people are shippers, though it may not take a form that is popularly recognized as shipping. why don't we get together and call ourselves an institute is a Person of Interest fic by shippers, for shippers, about shippers, which takes us through the alias-maintenance of our intrepid heroes Finch and Reese, mingled with the perspectives of their respective assistants and coworkers, who promptly form wild (though occasionally perceptive) ideas about the nature of their relationship.

And sure, this is a story about Finch and Reese and how donuts and nosy assistants brought them together, but more importantly, it's a story about the shipper in all of us.

Title: Play It Again
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Pairing: Stiles/Derek
Categories: AU, alternate universes, action/adventure, pre-slash, magic!Stiles, drama
Length: Epic (63,206 words)
Warnings: Minor character death. Violence. To be extra safe for comm rules: discussion of major character death, but not in the way you're used to, since their alternate universe counterparts are alive.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] metisket
Author Website: favicon metisket

Author's Summary: In which Stiles goes along with one of Derek’s plans and ends up in an alternate universe as a result. He should’ve known better. He did know better, actually, and that means he has no one to blame but himself.

“Laura wants to lure the kid in with food and kindness and make a pet of him, like a feral cat. Derek wants to have him arrested for stalking. They’re at an impasse. (And the rest of the family is staying emphatically out of it in a way that suggests bets have been placed.)”

Review:
Play It Again has drama, suspense, brilliant character voices, humor (often in the form of Stiles' wry observations), and the situation makes for a terrific plot.

metisket drops Stiles into an alternate universe that's a hell of a lot softer than the one he came from. If he seems badass, it's partly because of all he's been through with things going to hell back home, but mostly because he's landed in a world where the other characters we know haven't had to deal with much danger. A strong Hale family under the leadership of Talia Hale polices the supernatural, and Derek is one of a slew of family pack members...

Which brings us to Derek; he's very different, but in a way that actually explains a lot about the maladjusted Derek we're used to. This is what happens when Derek feels safe and never makes the big decisions. And when he's got an alpha-material big sister pushing him around and looking out for him. He's drawn to Stiles, but he can't figure him out. Stiles knows things he shouldn't, and his heartbeat reacts to the strangest things.

Sheriff Stilinski is great here, as is a Scott who hasn't met Allison yet. The Hales are all well written -- especially Laura and Peter.

I love heartache and humor together, and I love suspense, so I tore through this one in a day. It's a great read.

Summary:
Post Obsession Conversation: Gibbs and Tony have a rather revealing conversation following the events of Obsession. Picks up from the end of the episode.
Figuring It Out: Gibbs and Tony try to figure out where their relationship is headed after the revelations in Gibbs' basement. The team helps. Sometimes funny, sometimes serious.
Second Law: Gibbs and Tony continue to settle in to their new relationship and try to balance all the different aspects of their lives. As before, the team helps. Sometimes funny, sometimes not.

Review:
Here is a very nice verse following the Obsession episode during season 4.
The first fic is a perfect following to this episode. Their conversation is amazing and really show the connection between Gibbs and DiNozzo.
The second and third stories follow their growing relationship and deal with their lives in private and in their workplace. The problems are clearly posed and the author never shy away from them.
I really loved the athmosphere of this verse. The whole NCIS cast is well crafted. And the charaters are very much in character.
The cas files are also very realistic and well-written.
It's trully a must read in the NCIS fandom.

For once, Jonathan Kent realizes he is the one putting Clark in danger while Lex is in fact helping and has to redeem himself.
The relationships between Jonathan and Lex, Jonathan and Clark, Lex and Clark, and Lex and his father are well-crafted and spot on which is no small deed in such a short fic. It's really a nice pick me up story everyone can enjoy.
