Title: Insider Trading
Fandom: Yu-gi-oh
Pairing: Joey/Seto

Length: Epic (89,500)
Warnings: Prison Fic, Consent Issues, Violence

Summary: Seto winds up in prison for insider traiding, in the wrong prison. Joey Wheeler is his cell mate.

Review: This is a relatively standard prison fic, but Yanagi's writing is what puts it over the top. She's a very straight forward writer, with a flair for weaving cultural information into her fics. In this case it's Japanese culture which I have always found fascinating, particularly when it relates to anime fandoms like Yu-gi-oh.

For a fic based on a kids show, this is a very adult read. Sex, violence, and prison politics take center stage and are written about in unfliching detail. While both Seto and Joey are sympathetic characters, its clear that they aren't 'good' in the traditional sense. They are both very straight forward characters who do what needs doing and don't spend a lot of bemoaning the consequences of their actions and the story plays off of that.

This is a good read for anybody who likes a good prison fic, a less than romantic get together fic, or pragmatic characters.

Title: To Serve and Protect
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh
Pairing: Joey/Seto
Categories: Action Adventure, Angst, AU, Drama, Harlequin, Post-Canon, Romance
Length:Super- Epic (217,000)
Warnings: Violence, Abuse, Borderline character bashing,

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yanagi_wa
Website: UnderWillow's Tree

Summary: Joey has been undercover since he graduated high-school at the age of eighteen. Does he get to relax after his last assignment, of course not he winds up protecting Seto Kaiba from a stalker.

Review: This story is pretty standard fare as far as the plot goes. It follows the standard "Bodyguard" cliche. Mokuba hires Joey to protect Seto because Seto refuses to seek official protection. Because Seto thinks Joey is a criminal who needs a job in order to stay out of prison Seto agrees to let him act as a Bodyguard. Joey saves Seto's life multiple times and they fall in love.

What keeps this story from being to hum-drum is all of the details Suiyou packs into it. She really did her research and it shows. Almost every chapter teaches you something about Japanese Culture, the prison system, or even interior design, while still advancing the plot. This amount of information really keeps you immersed in the plot, because all the information you need to understand what is going on, is given within the context of the story. This means that even if you barely know anything about the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom, its worth giving the story a shot.

While I found the characters a bit OOC in some parts of the story, the fact that the story takes place years after the series, and is completely AU, keeps any breaks from character from being too jarring.

Resources: Battle City Overview

Summary: Sidealong story with the Battle City Plotline. Strange how Ryou Bakura is never seen in Battle City. Strange how often Marik has the chance to pop into visitors rooms. When they meet, how will fate change for them?

Review: This is one of the best courtship fics I've ever read, as it is romantic, fluffy and heart-wrenching by turns. The story starts out with a rather dramatic first meeting, when Marik rescues Ryou from the shadow realm and then follows Ryou as he comes to trust and love Marik. Marik is of course a typical bad-boy with a habit of being overly forceful, obsessed with getting what he wants and yet devoted enough to Ryou that he plans elaborate moonlight dances and romantic dates.

I love how Artemis uses fanfiction to expand on canon while making the character seem even more real than they are in canon. The characters gets a bit melodramatic in places but the plot is sound and the details she weaves into the story are amazing.

Unfortunately, there is no happy ending as this isn't a fix it fic and Marik is banished to the shadow realm at the end of the Battle City Arc, but the story is hopeful and beautiful despite or perhaps because of that fact.
