Summary: They had names now, the men in the 1967 Chevy Impala were Sam and Dean Winchester, and they were trying to save the world.

Review: Written by one of my top favourite authors of all time. This fic is a mix between a sequel of Dr. Horrible and an alternative Supernatural future where the gates of hell stay open. It’s a world where there is a never ending fight happening against the forces of evil, Billy joins up with the boys to help them with their war.

What I love so much about this fic is the feeling it gives you of light in the darkness. While the world is a miserable place, these people find happiness in each other and Billy especially as he gives them his weird science and wonderful weapons straight out of sci-fi. Billy finally has a place where he is appreciated.

There is nothing sadder than the ending of Dr. Horrible. Where he is all alone and he chooses to become evil because the people who claim to be good do the most harm. In this fic he finally finds himself on the right side and finds himself a happy ending. If you want a well written resolution then you should definitely read this fic.

The incest only happens in the last chapter so you may just read the first two chapters and should be alright.

Summary:Sam Winchester lived the first six months of his life in a happy family; the next twelve years as John Winchester's only son, and the last decade as an orphan. He's supposed to die at twenty-two trying to save the woman he loves from a fire, because he doesn't have a brother to pull him back. But the night Sam meets his Reaper he discovers that Death is overly fond of pop-culture references, too beautiful to be real, and reluctant to kill him.

Review: A new spin on an old romance, this clever little fic adds a surprisingly sweet layer in the middle. Dean is a reaper who keeps letting Sam slip by him, even encouraging him back to life. It’s adorable how these too banter over Sam’s often nearly dead body.

But the true treasure of the story is Sam’s relationship with the secondary characters. It’s surprising to think I never imagined how characters like Bobby and Ellen felt about the boys. I knew they saw themselves as slightly responsible for them but I never empathized with them as much as I did in this fic when you see how sad they were that Sam was always so alone.

Summary: Sam is young popular basketball captain in High School, and Dean is his new Assistant Coach, will Sam be able to resist that golden skin and freckles?

Review:
This is one of the first fics I have ever read and still in my memories as one of the best. Sam and Dean completely in their flavour. You find Sam determined to do everything the hard way and bitching at Dean to do the same and Dean with his fond indulgence for life and simple things making him a push over, making it hard for him to decipher the angst Sam is bringing his way.

Spoilers:

What makes this unusual as far as a student teacher fic goes is that it is done in defense of the teacher. It's clear throughout all this fic that Sam knows himself. Yet when they get caught, Sam is already 18 and still his parents prosecute despite his wishes.

I love the fact its pointed out that Sam is smarter, stronger and bigger than Dean. That he is more emotionally intelligent and even that while he read medical textbooks Dean was reading Harry Potter despite being the older teacher. You are left in no doubt that Dean had no power over Sam's decisions yet what it comes down to is when they first started having sex, less than a month before he turns 18 and that's all it takes to risk Dean being put away forever.

This fic has many sweet moments. Most is Sam and Dean getting to know each other.

An AU of Folsom Prison Blues, in this fic Sam doesn't deal as well with being incarcerated as he did in canon. Singled out by the other inmates, he and Dean have to pretend to be together in an effort to protect him - and then surprise surprise, they have to actually get together. It's smutty and wrong and ultimately satisfying.

Author's Summary:
Five years after the apocalypse didn’t happen and Sam and Dean have settled down, or as much as the Winchesters can ever settle down. Sam is a college professor and Dean a well-respected small business owner and they’re learning how to balance work, hunting and dog-ownership while coping with the metaphorical and literal scars of war. Life’s not perfect, not for a (sort of) out and proud couple in small town USA with a lot to hide, but they’re dealing, that is, until Dean employs one sexually-confused teenager who develops an unhealthy obsession with both of them... Switching between five years earlier and now, we learn how the boys came together, how they made it through the big fight and whether they’ll ever manage to find that flighty temptress, happily ever after.

Review:
Full of tension, both dramatic and sexual, this fic really kept my attention. The relationship between Sam and Dean is at its incestuous best here - fucked up and weird and yet intense and compelling. The fact that for half of the fic we're viewing Sam and Dean's relationship through the eyes of a formerly-straight, hair-triggered teenager really adds to that intensity. His inner monologue and his huge crush on Dean are very well written, perfectly portraying the all-encompassing nature of teen infatuation and sucking the reader into his at times awkward and funny longing.

The fic switches between his and Sam's POV as it shows us what happened between Sam and Dean before their current domesticity. Their story is both an interesting character study and a scorching hot sexual journey, as we read about their relationship developing both sexually and romantically, and how it has changed them and those close to them.

This author has also written plenty of other long and well written Supernatural fics - I highly recommend checking them all out if you haven't already.

Author's Summary:
With Sam trying out normal life at Stanford and his father working an undercover gig across the country, Dean is on his own and getting reckless. While investigating a series of mysterious deaths, he runs into a strange witch called Luna Lovegood, who is searching for what she calls a 'Horcrux'. (Seriously?) Suddenly Dean finds himself dealing with evil wizards, broomsticks, Bat-Bogey Hexes, Dementors, mirrors which order him to wear a pointy hat, and much more - all the while trying not to think too much about Luna's last name and whether it's accurate.

Review:
In this AU of the Deathly Hallows, Luna and some other members of the Order are in America tracking down a suspected Horcrux. Dean stumbles across her in battle, and her separation from the rest of the group results in her and Dean working together to track the Horcrux down. Luna is delightfully in character, and that results in an unusual - and all the more sweet for it - romance. Despite the dark subject matters that are Death Eaters and Horcruxes and Dementors, this is a light fic and an easy read. I don't quite believe that a Season 1 Dean would accept that there are good witches quite as quickly as he does, despite his protective instincts. Nevertheless, the fic is still a lovely read featuring a surprisingly compatible rare pair.

Author's Summary:
Omega wolves are so rare Dean Winchester never thought he’d meet one in his lifetime, let alone end up involved with one. But when the strange, enigmatic Castiel comes to Jackson Springs, one instinctive act of kindness throws the two of them together. Bound by instinct and something that runs much, much deeper, Dean finds himself torn between family, duty, and the stranger who's already burrowed deep under his skin.

Review:
I've read this fic so many times. The prose flows so nicely, it has a great balance of drama and romance, and it's not over the top or shoddily written as Omegaverse can sometimes be. It's a fun read with a satisfying resolution. Yes, this is a fic where omegas go into heat and alphas seek them out, but it focuses on Dean and Castiel's journeys to happiness rather than their sex life. There's no healing alpha cock in sight, and in fact Dean is the one who's the most unsure about his path in life.

Castiel is entirely himself in this fic. Though it's implied that he's had a rough or at least very isolated past, he's nowhere near a damsel dreaming of the strong arms of an alpha - he's already made his escape into the wider world and is living happily with Gabriel and Balthazar. It's Dean's issues with pack politics and his struggle with being an alpha that are the main focus of the fic, particularly his relationships with an asshole John, the usurper Azazel and a rebellious Sam who wants to get away from pack life. Though this isn't a groundbreaking fic, it's a solid, easy read that always makes me feel good.

Dean goes to pick Sam up from Stanford and ends up finding more than he bargained for.

Review:
The clue is in the title - this is a series of five fics, set in five different parts of San Francisco, wherein Sam is addicted to five different drugs. Instead of finding his brother at Stanford as we see in canon, Dean finds him in all sorts of places facing different challenges, both mundane and supernatural. Every fic has the same beginning paragraph and the same summary - and it's awesome to see how different the direction of each is despite this. The common theme of the fics is that Sam is taking drugs to deal with his psychic powers and their effect on his psyche.

rei-c's worldbuilding is amazing. The fics feature a wealth of different mythologies, and the author does justice to every one, despite how different they are. Hindu, Chinese, Vodou, Irish, Norse, and Wicca mythologies are all written with confidence, and if rei-c isn't an expert on all of them I certainly can't tell.

The other common theme of the series is Wincest, and healing brought to Sam by the arrival of Dean. Their relationship is definitely always a welcome comfort after the hurt, and there is a bit of the old being saved by true love trope - though the fics are too well-written to be called anything near saccharine.

Though drugs are a big part of the series, they are never glorified or portrayed as glamorous, and we clearly see that they aren't doing Sam any good. I wouldn't describe this series as depressing despite the heavy theme of drug addiction - because thankfully, there's always a Dean-shaped light at the end of the tunnel.

The warnings apply to the whole series rather then all of the fics, so make sure to look at their individual warnings.

A gen fic full of great characterisation and realistic interaction between the two groups. The rapport between the main four and the knights of Camelot is all great, with no greater emphasis on either fandom - though obviously the setting does lean towards Merlin. All characters strengths and weaknesses are portrayed equally, with neither fandom being 'stronger' than the other, all wrapped up in a case fic and supernatural drama. Pretty much everything you'd want in a gen crossover.

High school AU. It's Dean's senior year at Lawrence High, and he's already given up on himself. It takes the arrival of the strange, intense, awkward Castiel Delacroix at the school to prove to Dean that maybe his life is worth saving after all.

Review:
In this non-supernatural high school AU, a Dean that has been raped by Alaister struggles to carry on with a life that he's now unsatisfied with and not even sure he wants anymore. Cas is the son of a famous televangelist, finally able to go to a public school after a life of being stifled by his family of religious zealots. Dean shows Castiel what he's been missing out on during his uneventful life, and Castiel helps Dean regain his good marks and his self esteem. It's not the most original plot, but this was a fic well written enough to move me to tears.

It's a realistically slow journey. Dean's struggles definitely tug at the heart strings, whilst the non-explicit nature of the rape stops the angst from becoming at all sensational. This is rape recovery handled delicately; paced well and ending on a lovely high and fluffy note.

Review:
This is a hilarious, smutty get-together Wincest fic. Dean's affronted obsession with Sam's dick size is just so him and is a delight to read. Their pranks wars are hilarious, and Dean's sudden propensity for seeing phallic symbols everywhere he goes had me laughing out loud. A feel-good fic full of humour and fluff and hotness.

AU of season 5, veering off from canon after the end of 5.04, after Sam and Dean are hunting together again. In a diner one day, Sam notices that something's missing. Something kind of important.

Review:
Reading this fic was gut-wrenching. Written from Sam's POV and often delving into his inner thoughts - and his inner self-loathing - we get a front row seat as he starts to lose his senses one by one. It's a trope I've read before, and this fic is up there with the best. The author takes her time torturing poor Sammy, though she thankfully stays out of whump/woobie territory, and the fic is as restrained as something about a happening so horrible can be.

The relationship between Sam and Dean is so touching here. With Sam unable to even feel his own body, it's a return to Dean as a mother figure, taking care of him when he can't do it himself. Even as this is obviously humiliating for Sam, it's always heart warming when the brothers actually act as close as we know they are. Dean is Sam's anchor in a dark world, and that had me sobbing. A lovely, well-paced fic that's perfect if you're in the mood for a tearjerker and brotherly hurt/comfort.

A devotedly unreligious man sends his youngest son to a private religious school. If that wasn't suspicious enough, Sam can't get a hold of John or Dean, people are disappearing right and left, and, in the night, something whispers in the silence of the old chapel. Soon enough, Sam discovers that something terrible lingers behind the doors to the sacristy--something that sheds a light on the secret holy mission of the Soldiers of Christ as well what happened to his family so many years ago.

Review:
Here's my late rec for Horror/Mystery week. Oops.

This is a classic haunted house sort of story, wherein a lone Sam is stuck in an eerie and restrictive school. The author really nails the horror story atmosphere, and what would be a pretty tame plot in the actual show becomes much more engaging and creepy thanks to Sam's isolation and helplessness. He's not the gung ho hunter we see on the show, but a confused teenager, cut off from his family and facing the supernatural alone for the first time.

Gabriel appears as the janitor for the school, and his very IC presence provides some relief for both Sam and the reader. He's someone for Sam to turn to in a place full of sinister secrets and strict, watchful teachers. Their romance is more in the background, with the normalcy Gabriel provides contrasting sharply with the rest of the school. This is a creepy mystery with a gut punch of an ending that you need to read, even if you're not a fan of the pairing.

Summary:
Dean and Xander are the same sort of self-sacrificing idiot. It shouldn't be surprising that their relationship is made of angst.

Review:
I'm cheating slightly here; Province is a series of stories that chart a not exactly idyllic relationship between Dean and Xander. I'm not entirely sure that the series is complete — the major plotline clearly isn't resolved &mdash but nothing has been added for quite a while now, so I'm going to claim that all the important stuff is at least rounded off. As far as timelines go, it asserts that the first episode of Supernatural occurs shortly before the fall of Sunnydale, and starts bending canon from there on.

It begins with a break-up. Set The Fire To The Third Bar alternates between Xander and Dean having enthusiastic sex, and Dean calling to break up in the immediate aftermath of Jess's death. It's short, bitter, and makes perfect sense from Dean's point of view, and it's patently obvious that neither of them knows that the other knows all about the supernatural.

From there we watch Xander struggle through the fall of Sunnydale with plenty of taunting from the First Evil, not really having the time to deal. It feels a little strange because we're used to seeing Xander the goofball, and this Xander has too recent a hurt to play that part. Then Dean sees the news reports of the destruction of Sunnydale and loses it, because he knew that was where "Alex" lived. We are treated to exactly the sort of meltdown I'd expect from Dean; tightly controlled until he's too drunk to manage any more, and with Sam hovering and trying to stop his brother self-destructing.

The next story turns the screws. We reach the end of season 1 of Supernatural, and of course the Yellow-Eyed Demon lets John Winchester know that his oldest boy is gay, and lets Dean know that Alex is still alive and now its number one target. This naturally gets the Scoobies involved and things kick into high gear for a while, until Dean and Xander meet up in relative safety. And then the real fun begins.

For all the plot I've just described, and all the rest that I haven't, this is really a family drama. Xander and Dean are both damaged in their different ways, and have both been keeping secrets for that matter. It's not surprising that they have a hard time rebuilding trust. Throw in John, who has a whole barrelful of prejudices of different sorts all pushing his buttons, and a Sam who can't go five minutes without exploding at his father or wanting to know more than Xander will trust him with, and you have a highly volatile situation. The story takes a justifiably long time to work up enough trust that Xander and the Winchesters can function (albeit badly) as a team, and Dean and Xander both come out darker if marginally happier by the end. From Xander we get the overwhelming impression of weariness, and very little of his characteristic humour; from Dean we have a massive lack of confidence after his big decision went so badly wrong, and his trademark cockiness is sorely missing as a result.

This isn't a light or easy read, but it is very well written and nicely observed. The little nods to canon throughout the earlier stories help to anchor the later ones and make the crossover work. All in all, worth the effort if you can stand the angst.

Review:
I love this fic for how the author has used Gabriel's shapeshifting powers to write something that's both scorching hot and full of feels. The basic premise is that Sam and Gabriel keep running into each other after Gabriel's 'death' as the Trickster. Whenever they meet Gabriel is someone different, and every time they have sex. It's hot smut, but it's also a collection of episode coda's told through the different dynamics of each encounter.

Gabriel is always the dominant party, giving Sam what he needs and at the same time finding out both what he himself wants from their relationship, and what role he wants to play in the looming apocalypse. While a lovely source of smut, this is also a surprisingly romantic fic about the development of Sam and Gabriel's relationship. Gabriel isn't just enjoying sex with Sam, but is also in his own way making sure that Sam stays sane, and Gabriel's own slow realisation of this is a great read.

Within its walls lives a family that has never been touched by hate, fire or the Supernatural… but for one.

Review:
This fic comes from the earlier days of Supernatural fandom, when Jared had a fluffy fringe and many fans had an almost sadistic penchant for limp!Sam. This is one of those fics written during this time - before Sam went darkside, and instead was more of the fandom woobie. Fear not though - this fic only has touches of woobie and limp Sam rather than it being gratuitous, and is actually one of my favourite Supernatural fics. Written before season 3, in this fic there aren't any angels or deals with demons or apocalypses - there's just the normal world and the monsters that go bump in the night, and Sam is the only one in his family that knows about the latter. It's a fun fic with angst that is delicious rather than overwrought, with an easy to read writing style that makes this one of my go-to comfort fics.

The best part of this fic has to be the relationship between Sam and Dean. They've grown up with a normal family and a living mother, and as a result aren't nearly as codependent as they are in canon. Instead they're just normal siblings, annoying and tolerating each other by turns. It's satisfying to see their relationship change over the course of the fic as Sam struggles to hide his double life and Dean starts to wonder what the hell is going on with his brother. If you love identity porn, dramatic secrets and the brotherly relationship between Dean and Sam, you will love this fic.

Review:
I'm usually one that avoids angsty fics, but this one is a beautiful example of angst done right, being the thing that makes the story rather than a gratuitous addon. Sam regains his soul after a much longer period of time than in canon, waking up to a different world and a different Dean. A Dean who won't tell Sam what happened whilst his soul was missing, and in fact doesn't even seem to want to be around him. Sam's bewilderment and hurt are heart-wrenching to read, and I found myself with my heart in my throat throughout the fic, aching for him as he tries to figure out what happened when he was gone and why his and Dean's relationship is so stilted and changed.

Both Sam and Dean are characterised beautifully. Sam is all too easy to empathise with, and Dean is understandably different but still very much recognisable after three years of soulless!Sam. You'll be at the edge of your seat whilst reading this fic - it really takes you on an emotional ride. At the ending of my first read through I felt like I'd been through the wringer - in an awesome way! - as I was so invested in the characterisation and the story. This is one hell of a fic that you should read even if, like me, you're not much of an angst lover.

But the cave he finds contains a thing trapped in a circle of fire—a thing that calls himself Castiel and claims to be an angel. Castiel says he requires his freedom and that he’ll heal Dean in exchange. Dean’s far from convinced about any of it, but his encounter with Castiel is something he’s not going to be able to shake.

Review:
Castiel and Dean meet not after Dean is pulled out of Hell, but rather after Dean makes his deal. Their relationship develops throughout the events of season 3, creating a different dynamic to that we see in the show. The fact that an imminent apocalypse or Dean's time in Hell aren't yet looming over their interactions makes their friendship feel more like a natural development between kindred spirits than something guarded or uncertain. This is a lovely friendship fic that can satisfy both a lover of BFF!Dean/Cas and a shipper.

I read this fic as Dean/Cas pre-slash, but the author describes it and its sequel (which I haven't read) as Gen, so that's what I've tagged it as. If you're not a fan of Dean/Cas I can assure you that nothing slashy happens. Dean and Castiel's interactions can either be seen as a developing close friendship or a developing relationship.

There are three things you should know about Sam right now: he's still crazy, he's one of the only survivors in a Leviathan-led zombie apocalypse, and, oh yeah, he's pregnant with an incest parasite-baby-thing. And no, this isn't a guess-which-part-is-a-lie game. And maybe, with a pinch of luck, you might be led to a happy ending. But considering Sam's a Winchester, that road seems like a fat chance.

Review:
In a post-apocalyptic dystopia, the human race has been ravaged by Leviathans and zombies. In this verse only 'fertiles' are able to have children, and they can be of either sex. This is a Wincest fic, but not one where Sam and Dean are in true love; theirs is a purely sexual relationship, and when Sam discovers he is not only able to become pregnant, but also actually pregnant - with Dean's child - there's definitely no rejoicing. This is a tense, angsty, and at times darkly funny look at what society is like post-apocalypse. The author doesn't shy away from Sam's dark thoughts about his pregnancy, or the dangers faced by those who are able to reproduce when the human race is suffering from a population shortage.

Sam and Dean's relationship isn't the best in this fic, and as a fan of much more loving Sam/Dean stories it was sad to see them so emotionally distant. They really are just brothers having sex rather than in love with each other, and though I would normally prefer a more romantic relationship, this type of Wincest makes for an interesting and perhaps more realistic change. My only criticism would be the somewhat deus ex machina nature of the ending.

There is a sequel to this fic with a different tone, being focused instead on Sam and Dean's domestic lives. I don't think it lives up to its predecessor.

Author's Summary:
A story in 21 parts, featuring an Ancient Greek curse, an unexpected metamorphosis, adventures in pool sharking, numerous shots of tequila, a nun outfit, zombies, angels, demons, kidnappings, startling discoveries about old acquaintances, massage, a game of strip poker, girl-on-girl action, girl-on-boy action, and boy-on-boy action. Despite my expectations or inclinations, it swiftly became clear that this story was going to be Sam/Dean. And, indeed, it is. Because my muse likes to fuck with me.

It also features Girl!Dean - but don't let that put you off. It's still Dean, bless him, despite the sudden girlsuit.

Review:
Hunting a witch, Dean gets cursed to turn into a girl when he kills her. It's a cliched plot in the Supernatural fandom, where the existence of things such as witches gives free reign to introduce any sort of strange transformation you could want and still keep your story believable. Though the plot of this fic can't be called fresh, the way that Dean's character is handled after his transformation is great. Dean's personality stays in tact after his physical change, rather than turning him into an OFC or a damsel in distress. Other simple, realistic details such as short-haired Dean not waking up with long flowing locks, or bothering to shave his legs after his transformation, help to make this a refreshingly in character genderswitch fic. He also doesn't start calling himself Deanna! The Dean-centric nature of the fic means we're hearing Dean's inner monologue throughout, and I really think that the author has his personality down pat. His thoughts, reactions and observations are a delight to read, and funny to boot.

This fic also contains another popular genderswitch trope, which is the genderswitch being the catalyst for a relationship to develop. The sexual tension between Sam and Dean is delicious to read, and feels more like a natural development of their co-dependent relationship than an abrupt change brought on only by Dean's new physique. This is a funny and hot read that definitely contains many genderswitch tropes, but doesn't fall into the trap of OOCness.
