Summary: Returning home after installing the program he hopes will change his timeline, Rodney McKay gets some surprise guests.

Review: This is a tag for 4.20 The Last Man. What happens to Rodney McKay once he returns to Earth after installing the hologram program to bring John back? Why, he gets a visit from his team, of course. This fic is just an emotional rollar coaster, as Rodney thinks about how empty his future is now that he's solved The Problem, as he calls it. Then there's the reunion with each of his team members and the revelations that come with it. It's sad and beautiful and funny, and well written like all of [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison's fic is. It's a quick read too, since it's not super long. Treat yourself to this fic - you won't regret it!

Title: If All Else Fails
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis/Stargate SG:1
Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Jack O'Neill/Sam Carter, Daniel Jackson/Vala Mal Doran
Categories: First Time, Romance, Crossover, Angst, Action/Adventure,
Length: First installment: 69k, total for series: 221k
Warnings: Violence, Rape/Non-con (off screen and never detailed)

Summary: Technically, it’s known as Operation Phoenix, but that’s a little too optimistic for Jack, who calls it the WAFGON plan: We’re All Fucked; Get Out Now.

Why You Should Read This: This series starts with the Trust taking over the SGC. In response, Jack sends out as many gate teams as he can, instructing them to try for Atlantis. SG1 is off-world when things come to a head, and thus must make their way to Atlantis with the knowledge that they're leaving Jack - and others, such as Cassie - behind on Earth to face who knows what consequences. Atlantis, meanwhile, must deal with being cut off from Earth and struggle with some pressing question: do they fight to save Earth? How can they rescue more of their people, including the families of those posted to Atlantis?

At the moment, there are 5 complete works in this series. The series itself is listed as incomplete, however. The first installment chronicles SG-1’s journey to Atlantis, as well as how Atlantis has begun to deal with suddenly being an independent colony. John and Rodney’s relationship doesn’t happen until the third installment, so be aware of that, but this fic is so good that I didn't even mind. Very well written, with an excellent focus on a broad cast of characters.

Title: Paper Cranes (Upstairs, Downstairs)
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Categories: First Time, Romance, Humor
Length: Long (18,960 words)
Warnings: None

Summary: “Oh my God,” Rodney says, stricken. “This is —this is one of those British costume dramas Ronon always wants to watch and I’m the uncouth American!”

Why You Should Read This: I am ridiculously enthusiastic about this fic. Rodney accompanies John to his brother’s wedding, leading to moments that are laugh out loud funny. When I read this fic the first time, I was tweeting my favorite lines as I read. There's an unexpected appearance of a member of SG1, Rodney's mouth getting him into trouble, cookie making, and Rodney interacting with children. John and Rodney have this great argument about pets that make them seem so married. There are OC’s, but they're not a main focus of the fic and I really liked them. Rodney becomes an honorary bridesmaid! What more from a fic could you want than that? This a great read, very quick, and I have yet to come across a person who didn't greatly enjoy it.

Author's Summary:
When Faith Lumsbred disobeys the decree of Queen Harmony and goes into the forbidden part of the woods, she expects to discover something cool, or at least something suitably unsettling. Finding instead an ageing astrophysicist and his cat she decides to get to the bottom of the things. How did McKay end up here? Why has the queen gone to such lengths to keep him hidden? And what exactly has he been doing out here all by himself?

Review:
Do not let the presence of an OC keep you from reading this fic. She's a likable character who feels very real, and I love the relationship between her and Rodney. As Faith discovers bits and pieces of Rodney's past, the story of what drove Rodney to Harmony's planet unfolds, and it's tragic but interesting. In typical Rodney fashion, he's determined to fix things, but it's taken him many years. Harmony is a grown, mature woman in this fic, but with hints of the mischieviousness of her youth - I could picture her growing up to be just like this. I love Rodney's persistence, the way he never forgets or deviates from his goal. I ache for him and all that he's lost, but I enjoy the way Faith bursts into his life. The plot is interesting and well-written, the characters feel real and themselves, and despite the angst the fic has it's funny moments that lighten the mood. It's really just an enjoyable read!

Author's Livejournal: [livejournal.com profile] daughtershade

Summary: The unique thing about Event Horizon, and something Rodney was quite proud of, was that the store itself was a physical representation of the mind of its owner. The filing system that had so amused Sheppard served a greater purpose. The problem was that Rodney hadn't yet figured out just what that purpose was. He only knew that he liked things a certain way. If one took a moment to piece the filing system together, they would realize that it told the story of one man, perched behind his counter, trying to fend off the world.

Review: I discovered this fic long after the fandom had gotten quiet. There had been no announcement posts on livejournal so I basically stumbled on this fic, and was astonished it wasn't being rec'd anywhere. I love every moment of this fic. John and Rodney's first meeting is so entertaining, as is every subsequent meeting between the two. I really like the original characters the author uses. They feel like real, fleshed out people and are so interesting on their own. I really love the detail and thought the author put into Rodney's little bookshop, too - especially the organization. John and Rodney's relationship progresses nicely.

This is a well written, entertaining fic that never fails to make me happy. It's a quick read, too - even if 25000 seems like quite a bit (I know some people prefer shorter fics) it'll go by fast.

Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Genres: AU, Romance, Hurt/Comfort, First Time, Kid!fic
Length: Super Epic (108,691 words)
Warnings: Descriptions of past child abuse, serious injury to a main character

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dragonlady7
Author Website: bomberqueen17 @ AO3

Author's Summary:
Life's what happens when you make other plans.
Rodney McKay gets back from his unjust Siberia exile and takes a consulting gig that lets him work from home. He picks a random city, gets a cat, and starts cultivating his eccentricity. His upstairs neighbor is an insanely hot guy whose cop uniform either means the obvious, or that his night job is a stripper. Rodney doesn't care which, he's busy becoming the old lady with the twitching lace curtains who watches everything. (And, yeah, thinking about what that strip routine might look like. Are those real handcuffs?)

John Sheppard quit the Air Force in a last-ditch attempt to save his marriage, since there was a kid on the way. It didn't work, and in fact backfired spectacularly, so now he's left with child support payments and a mortgage on a house he doesn't live in (his dad's a dick), an ex-wife who still loves him enough to yank more little bits out of his heart every chance she gets, a kid he gets to see for a few hours every other week, and a job where he gets shot at almost as much as the one he used to love that he quit. (He's a cop. He's okay at it. That's a hard adjustment to make.) But at least his new downstairs neighbor is hilarious.

Review:
I am deeply in love with bomberqueen17's work. I really enjoy how she writes John and Rodney, both as characters and as people in a relationship. Her writing style is engaging, her plots carry momentum and keep the reader interested, and the sex is hot. It's a nice mix of fluff and angst, too. Most of the fic focuses on John and Rodney as their relationship unfolds, as Rodney learns more about John's struggles. John's son has a strong presence in the fic, even when he's not in a scene itself, because John is a devoted father and much of what he does is with Joey in mind. With kid fic, it's always important to me that I actually *like* the child, and Joey is absolutely adorable and I look forward to his appearances.

Other Plans is technically the first fic in a series but the next installment is a work in progress. However, OP ends in a satisfactory place, though the author does make mention of plot arcs that are to be continued in the series. Nothing sticks out in my mind as unresolved in such a way that I want to tear my hair out. As for the warnings, as the author puts it: "There is no non-con or sexual abuse of a minor *in* this story, but there is discussion of it happening to a character in the past."

Review: This is an amazing gen series. I love the team dynamic and how much they are all willing to go for bat for a Rodney that is a little more broken than in the universe we inhabit.

There is adventure and casefic and everything fits together so that it feels like these bits and pieces of an Alternate Universe could almost have happened in our version of Atlantis.

The city sang to John, and he understood at last why the scholars always spoke of the earliest days of Middle-earth through the medium of music.

Review:
When you think about it, there is an epic sweep to the whole idea of Stargate Atlantis: going to another galaxy to find a city out of legend is about as epic as it gets. Mix this with the epic that is the Silmarillion, and you could end up with a clash of gears as two mutually inconsistent background fight for supremacy.

Fortunately, Jedi Buttercup is a lot better than that. "The truth was probably a lot less metaphorical," the narrator muses early on, and just like that the backgrounds are sweeping in the same direction. That's typical of this story; gentle writing, perfectly evoking Tolkien, leads you through this short story in such a natural way that you accept the incongruities as perfectly natural. At heart it's a character study of someone bridging the gap between the two backgrounds, and it works so well that by the end I was completely sold.

This fic is quite simply beautiful.

Review: This story is Dark. Pay attention to the warnings and please take care when you are reading it.

In a world where feline shifters are considered a lesser breed and forced into slavery the minute they are discovered, John grew up and became a Air Force Shifter. Through the events at the Antarctic base it is discovered that all shifters have the ATA gene.

This changes the course of history as the SGC uses this new information to free the felines. This in turn changes everything about the Atlantis mission.

What really impressed me about this fic is how blackchaps gave John two district but partnered viewpoints. That of himself as a human and that of himself as a feline. Also the fact that Rodney is a cat lover is used to good effect to get him to ignore the self-preservation instinct and become John's biggest supporter. And as for the romance, lets just say my biggest soft spot when it comes to romance is when both of the lovers are willing and able to protect and stand up for each other.

Review:
An email comes to Rodney from the SGC: They're shutting down the Atlantis expedition. What follows is a plan that increasingly edges into uncertain territory -- in a galaxy full of unexpected danger, who's truly in control?

The best part about the Atlantis expedition is the strong bonds and friendships that are built up between people, like-minded people with a thirst for adventure and exploration and more than anything, standing together against the great unknown. This fic showcases this wonderfully, and just a little heartbreakingly.

This is a taut and suspenseful read, set in Season 4. Written for the Ways to Die challenge on [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic.

calapine makes an unconventional but beautiful choice with her song, and for something so epic in scope, she makes it impactful on a personal scale as well, and deeply uplifting. This tribute is amazing not only for its subject matter, but also for its diversity. Women are not just awesome when they are gorgeous and kick-ass and come out with both guns blazing, but they're also awesome when they're doing science experiments, or being brave, or making difficult decisions.

Women can be some of the most harshly judged characters on screen -- because often, women are their own harshest critics. This vid highlights some unexpected choices, and reminds us that every single woman is more than just the few seconds we see them on screen -- they each have their own stories.

This is an absolutely gorgeous digital painting of the team preparing for an expedition -- but in a gloriously vintage setting. And the airship! ♥ Leyna's attention to detail is marvellous, and her pictures always look so lifelike. This is the kind of picture that makes imagination take flight.

Summary:
Evan digs out his cell phone from where it had fallen out, wedged into the back of the seat. There are a total of twelve new missed calls: Nikki, Laura, Charlie, Laura, Nikki, Mitchell, Laura, Colby, Daniel, his SGC lawyer, Laura, Laura. "Shit," he says, staring at the call log as his stomach pools with dread. Something's happened to Atlantis.

Review:
Note: this story was written before DADT was actually repealed and imagines a future in which it was ultimately repealed. In this fic we get two stories. The first story is set a few years in the past, following Lorne’s dishonorable discharge and how he copes after losing Atlantis. The second story is the repeal of DADT in the near future and what implications that has for a Lorne who is now comfortable in his new life and career.

I like the Colby and Lorne dynamic here. There’s something steady and calm about them. They mesh well together, even when out of sync, especially as Lorne is confused about how he wants to move forward with his life after his discharge. Colby is solid, accepting of Lorne’s secrecy but ultimately supportive of him. There’s not a lot of drama and fire to their relationship, it’s more quiet and steady (much like the characters themselves), and I enjoyed that.
