Author's Summary:
A multi-fandom vid for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon's celebration of female characters.

Review:
calapine makes an unconventional but beautiful choice with her song, and for something so epic in scope, she makes it impactful on a personal scale as well, and deeply uplifting. This tribute is amazing not only for its subject matter, but also for its diversity. Women are not just awesome when they are gorgeous and kick-ass and come out with both guns blazing, but they're also awesome when they're doing science experiments, or being brave, or making difficult decisions.

Women can be some of the most harshly judged characters on screen -- because often, women are their own harshest critics. This vid highlights some unexpected choices, and reminds us that every single woman is more than just the few seconds we see them on screen -- they each have their own stories.

This will be Pirates of the Caribbean's last entry in a Small Fandom theme week, as it's just reached 5 recs. Congrats, PotC, you've graduated!

Title: Hurricane Jack
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Pairing: Will Turner/Jack Sparrow
Categories: AU, First Time, Humor, Porn with Plot
Length: Medium (5,642 words)
Warnings: Drunksex (so could be viewed as dubious consent, however consent is given and activities are mutual)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shrift / [personal profile] shrift
Author Website: shrift's fan fiction

Author's Summary:
In which Will Turner most emphatically does not avoid familiarity with pirates, Captain Jack Sparrow cheats in his infamous and fabulous fashion, vast quantities of rum lead to drunkenness and debauchery, and there are no silly nautical euphemisms for sex (so long as the barnacles don't count).

Review:
A post-Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl AU, in which a Will Turner bereft of Elizabeth wanders into a bar in Tortuga and back into Jack Sparrow's life, much to Jack's pleasure.

I love, love, love this fic. It's incredibly vivid and the characters feel like they've walked right out of the movies and into the story. The narration has a sort of looping whimsy, reminiscent of Jack himself and the author's Jack voice is particularly spot on (I can seriously hear Johnny Depp delivering this line: "I'll consider it unconsidered if you will consider that as a pirate, it's in my very nature to consider it."), and the drunken and befuddled Will is a perfect foil for him. Nigh on every moment is hilarious, if you find Jack Sparrow a funny guy. I also enjoyed the author's Terry Pratchett-esque use of parenthetical meta commentary, which frequently gave me the giggles. Lastly, the sex is visceral and smokin' hot.

As a side note, I like that shrift gives Elizabeth a happy and independent ending (albeit off 'screen'), despite the fic focusing in the main slash pairing; it really feels respectful of all three primary characters of the film.

It was hard to pick a section to quote; seriously this whole fic is quotable. Click here to read an excerpt. )

The Revenge by shadesofbrixton (PG)

Sorry for the late post! Complicated RL things kept me away last evening.

Title: The Revenge
Fandom: Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean
Pairing: Jack Sparrow/Inigo Montoya
Categories: Crossover, Humor, Post-Canon (for Princess Bride)
Length: Medium (2,967 words)
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shadesofbrixton
Author Website: faviconshadesofbrixton / Angelfire Alias fanfiction index (I couldn't find any other angelfire index)

Summary:
Inigo doesn't make a good pirate, but luckily for him, Jack Sparrow makes an excellent one.

Review:
After the events of The Princess Bride, Inigo takes on the mantle of the Dread Pirate Roberts from Westley. Unfortunately, he's terrible at it, and his crew abandons him. Fortunately for both Inigo and us, the readers, Jack Sparrow is in need of a ship and takes both Inigo and his ship in hand.

I love the character interactions here; Jack is very Jack, and Inigo, while maybe sillier than in canon, is so much fun as a drunken failed pirate. This fic is a blast from start to finish.

Fair warning, the only link I know of to this fic is on Angelfire, so there are some pop-ups and ads to deal with.

Title: Diving for Pearls by Kitty Fisher
Fandom: Pirates of the Carribean
Pairing: Sparrow/Norrington
Categories: action, hurt/comfort, angst, harlequin, romance
Length: Epic (~52,000 words)
Warnings: Torture

Author on LJ: n/a?
Website: n/a

Review:
After the events of the first movie, Norrington is put on forced administrative leave. He promptly goes off to hunt Jack Sparrow on his own time, only to find himself captured by a much more nasty pirate. Which eventually leads to the most unlikely rescue by a most unlikely rescuer...

I'll admit that for the longest time I simply could not understand all of the fandom love for Norrington. Then I saw James without his wig and, well. I'm not made of stone.

This was the very first Jack/James fic I ever read and it remains my favorite, full of kidnapping and dramatic escapes, villains and heroes, adventure and romance. The writing is very good, the plot is engaging, and the boys are both rather adorable while still being in character. Lots of fun, lots of action, and lots of smut make for a very satisfying read.

A Tale of Two Sentinels by Arnie (PG13)

 Sorry, this is a bit late. It's been one of those days.
~~~
Title: A Tale of Two Sentinels
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean/The Sentinel
Pairing: Gen: James Norrington/Jack Sparrow; Blair Sandburg/James Ellison
Categories: AU, Crossover,Historical
Length: Medium (20,000)
Warnings: Kidnapping, Bonding with Dubious consent
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] arnie1967
Website: Arnie's Fanfic Site
Review: Arnie is one of my favorite Sentinel writers, with her wonderful gen bonding fics. This is one of her most unusual fics, fusing the Sentinel with Pirates of the Caribbean. The Characterization is wonderful as always with Arnie.
Jack is a hard character to write well, since he pretty much steamrolls over all of the other characters, but Arnie manages to keep him sympathetic, even while he's in the process of kidnapping James. Blair doesn't want to become a Guide but his relationship with Jim is kept from being uncomfortable or squicky, and all of the supporting characters are right on the mark.
The story is probably best understood if you have at least a passing familiarity with the Sentinel and Pirates of the Caribbean fandoms, but it is well written enough that you should be able to follow the story with a little bit of work, particularly if your used to reading alternate history stories.
