Clutter by forthright (PG-13)

Title: Clutter
Fandom: Inuyasha
Pairing: Kagome Higurashi/Sesshoumaru
Categories/Genres: Alternate Universe, Fluff, Romance, Humor
Length: Long (~20000 words)

Summary:

AU. Mrs. Higurashi decides to help her daughter put her life together; enter Sesshoumaru, professional organizer extraordinaire. Kagome resents having a perfect stranger rummaging through her messes, but he's bound and determined to show her the folly of her easy-going ways. A romantic comedy told in 100-word snippets.

Review:

If I had never watched a minute, nor read a page of Inuyasha in my life, my life would be poorer not for never having known it, but for having missed this fic. Clutter exists in my mind as the quintessential fanfiction version of a nineties romcom. There's a quirky premise, a lead pair who push and pull with fantastic chemistry, and a supporting cast of (sometimes inanimate) characters that add humor and depth and the occasional wrench thrown into the lead pairing's respective lives.

For the uninitiated, forthright's use of the drabble can be jarring, and the number of chapters dauntinng, but it's easy enough to adapt, namely because forthright is a master of the format. Each 100 word segment works to move the story forward. Forthright is also generous with the punchlines, the humor light and quick and charming.

Summary:

On Halloween, Kagome decides to dress as her utter opposite. Of course, she never expected to run into him.

Review:

The part of me that's gnashing its teeth at how good this fic is wants me to yell, “READ IT. NOW.” and have that be the rec. Its more diligent, responsible counterpart is also gnashing its teeth, but wants to gush and gush and gush about this fic for a few thousand words. Hopefully I will find a happy medium.

Convivial, as far as I am concerned, is the best post-canon Kagome/Sesshoumaru romance, bar none. It's so good that it made me like poetry and I hate poetry, okay. The characterization is a outstanding extrapolation of the canonical characters, five hundred years having aged and mellowed the demons (and half-demons) without taking away the spark of what makes them who they are. The six years that have passed since Kagome returned from the Feudal Era for good have changed her in many ways, not all for the better, and the consequences of those changes ripple endlessly through the story and Kagome's relationships with the demons she's united with.

While I'm generally leery of original characters, I absolutely adored The Hatter Theory's additions to the main cast. Each is dynamic and fascinating in their own way to the point that, when one briefly introduced character passes away, I felt a moment of sadness for the loss of them. Even the original characters who are indifferent to the story's progression or just plain jerks are able to draw out an emotional reaction.

Where The Hatter Theory truly excels is in writing characters as growing, changing entities. They discover, learn, evolve, and grow throughout the fic in ways that are enchanting, and sometimes heartwrenching, to watch. Kagome is particularly dynamic and, though one sometimes wants to smack her upside the head for her decisions, her motivations are realistic and her mistakes are learned from in due time.

On top of all that, The Hatter Theory's writing style is smooth and well polished, and the reason I chose to rec this fic rather than a far more well known Kagome/Sesshoumaru fic. There is some abrupt jumping around from one chapter to the next, a consequence of writing chapters according to prompts with unremarked time skips between, but the flow of the characters' emotions is consistent in spite of it.

Aaaaand, this rec got really long. So click the link down there and rEAD IT. NOW.

If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, what galaxy are youkai from? Because Kagome would really like to know.

Review:
Sess/Kag is my favourite Inuyasha pairing, and this is a funny and fluffy example of it. Kagome is bewildered by Sesshoumaru's new habit of giving her dead animals as gifts, and their failure to communicate is what the humour of this fic is focused on. Sesshoumaru is utterly endearing without being OOC, and Kagome is oblivious in a funny rather than frustrating way. A lovely comfort read with plenty of laughs and fluff.

Author's Summary:
Something goes awry during a trip through the Well, and Kagome is stranded in the distant past where she encounters a familiar face. When a very young Sesshoumaru decides to keep her, the consequences ripple through time.

Review:
This fic is, hands down, one of my favorite Inuyasha fics ever. Inuyasha holds a special place in my heart, if only because I loved that show when I was younger, and Sesshoumaru is one of my favorites. And Kagome is one of my favorites. Ergo, Sesshoumaru and Kagome together is my favorite of favorites for this show and--uh, I'm getting off track. Whoops.

This is wonderful. You have Sesshoumaru who, at least in the beginning, is young (a child, really) and untried, but is still himself. Still reserved and proud and kind of terrifying, but he's a child. Kagome is confused and is clutching onto Sesshoumaru because he's familiar (and even then not all that familiar), but somehow their relationship grows in leaps and bounds. But not in a creepy way! There's no hint of any sort of romantic relationship when Kagome is together with Sesshoumaru in the past. Mostly there's a lot of affection and warm fuzzy feelings that have more to do with them being a pack and family.

This fic also takes an original character and runs away with it. Beautifully. Hisoka was so convincing as a character I paused in the middle of the fic, tilted my head, and went, "Wait, maybe he was actually some sort of really minor character...?" (I did a brief Google search. Answer is no, haha). Each character is nuanced. Each one has their own motivations and feelings and hopes, but they all mesh so well with one another. I found each person absolutely spot on.

The fic does do some time jumping, with most of the fic set in the past with Kagome and a young Sesshoumaru, but a good chunk of the fic is set in the future with the emergence of feelings. It's not an instant-click sort of thing either, there's still plenty of uncertainty and confusion (on Kagome's part, at least), but you never doubt the fact that she and Sesshoumaru would get together and be happy.

The story itself was written as a series of drabbles that interlock with one another, which might be a bit off putting to some, but it still flowed very well for me. I had no trouble with moving from one part to the next and a lot of the drabbles are direct continuations of the previous ones. If you want romance from the start this isn't the fic for you, but if you don't mind the long way around, lots of fluff, and the thought of how the past, present, and future are all related, well. Read the fic. You really won't be disappointed.

Lost Hopes by Miyuki (NC17)

Fandom: Inuyasha
Pairing: Inuyasha/Kouga

Length: Super-Epic (120,500)
Warnings: Mpreg, Consent Issues, Miscarriage, Character Bashing,

Author on LJ: n/a

Review: I waffled back and forth about reccing this story. While compelling, this story deals with a lot of controversial and uncomfortable situations. I decided to rec it mainly because of the world-building Miyuki seems to excel in. One of the problems I have with Inuyasha fiction is the fact that the demons are generally characterized as basically human with some darker qualities. In Lost Hopes, the demon subculture is shown in depth, almost to the exclusion of the canon characters and subplots.

Unfortunately, in order to separate this story from canon time-line Miyuki uses a devastatingly bad break up between Kagome and Inuyasha that culminates in Inuyasha having a miscarriage. Miyuki also uses Kagome as a foil in the later part of the story. She's the one who just can't understand demon culture and feels the need to point out how 'wrong' Kouga and Inuyasha's relationship is. This borderline character bashing gets tiresome but is thankfully easy to skim over as its not an essential part of the main plot.

While I have some problems with the characterization of the fic, Lost Hope is one of the more realistic, if dark M-pregs I've read. I particularly like the fact that the pregnancy isn't shown as being all sunshine and roses, with a little bit of morning sickness thrown in. The strain it puts on Kouga and Inuyasha's relationship is obvious and understandable and their confusion over how to handle the babies is amusing.

Review:
I feel almost redundant reccing this fic, because it just seems like one of those fics that every Inu/Kag shipper has read. It is simply amazing – Inuyasha is a huge rockstar, and Kagome (against her will) wins a contest to meet him. Of course, they fall in love, despite mutual resistance to the idea… but not without first facing kidnappings, a shootout, and an exploding toilet. Miroku, Sango, Sesshoumaru, and Kikyo all have featured roles as well (Kikyo is hilarious as Inuyasha’s stoic and take-no-pity agent). This fic is simply a must-read.

On the Night of the New Moon – chapter one

Author's Summary: Kagome has never felt so alone...

Review:
This is a true girl-power Inuyasha fic, which is such a wonderful breath of fresh air in this fandom that I’m really excited to rec this piece. So much of IY fanon and canon is about Inuyasha “protecting” Kagome, about how she can’t defend herself, about how possessive Inuyasha is of her and her well-being. Very rarely do we get to see Kagome use her powers and abilities independent of Inuyasha, and this fic does a wonderful job of accomplishing that. Kagome is scared, but she overcomes her fear to become a strong, capable, brave woman, and not only does she come to that realization, but so does Inuyasha. It’s beautifully and powerfully written, and I’d recommend it to anyone.
