Summary: A tribute to Edward Elric.

Review: I will not be beaten//You have yet to see me shining, shining//I wont take this lying down

If you haven't stumbled across MMVs ever, they're simply still comic strip manga panels trimmed and edited and then vidded to music... the same as AMVs are the animated clips vidded to music. I think this particular video was the first MMV I ever encountered and it made an impression, managing to achieve unexpected heights with monochrome manga panels, song choice and timing, and I've always found it to have a real emotional impact in delivering the character's story.

The song (which I suspect I might not like so much in other circumstances) is perfect, and the vid captures all the arrogance and failure, pride and strength and contradictions and tragedy of Edward Elric, in a fashion I've yet to see matched by vidding the anime. This is one of those favourites I used to play on repeat when I was desperately awaiting the next chapters of the manga.

The vid is downloadable on AMV.org or streaming on YouTube.

Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Pairing: gen
Categories: action/adventure, crack, caper, time travel, post-canon
Length: super epic, ~328,000 words
Warnings: Only that it's left fairly open-ended, and the sequel looks to be in a permanent state of unfinished.

Summary: Time travel. Conspiracy theories. Leylines. Pop culture crack and bad movie references. Hackers, ghost hunters and detectives, oh my! When crossing the gate, be sure to look both ways. Post series.

Review: "Maul?!" Ed asked. His eyes had gone wide as he stared around at all the different stores. The place was two floors high, bigger than any market he'd ever seen, and a cacophony of lights, sounds, and enticing aromas.

This is going back a few years now, to before the manga had an ending, before Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood had been made, and when the 'ending' for the series was that of the original anime and sequel movie Conqueror of Shamballa. This ridiculously epic gen fic, with its entourage of well-written original characters plus a surprise addition back-from-the-dead, is set after the movie, as a time travel incident propels Edward and Alphonse Elric into the modern world. They are helped to survive and navigate it by the dropouts, hippies and dissidents they meet along the way.

The story is a giant collaborative effort and exceedingly well written. The original characters and their voices are distinct. It's kind of the neverending fic, but it's also a lot of fun. According to the author profile, the plot was an accidental discovery, but I couldn't really tell, though it's in no hurry to rush enjoying all the gags about Edward in the modern world and the character moments along the way. It also has the capacity to turn surprisingly dark in its serious moments -- bear in mind that Ed and Al have time travelled from 1920s Germany, unknowing of the future that was to come.

Demon Alchemist Series by metisket (R)

Author's Summary:
“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re doin’ your best. It’s just your best isn’t quite good enough, Colonel. So while you’re doing whatever the hell it is you do, I’ll be here cleaning up after you.”

Review:
While technically this is a complete series, I figure I might as well rec the entire series all together because it is flat out amazing. You want something that is both hilarious and capable of giving you so many feelings about short homicidal alchemists? You want something so cleanly written and smooth that you barely notice time going by? You want awesome characters being even more awesome, even when they kind of fail? Yeah. Read this. You really won't regret it.

This fic takes the timeline of FMA and yanks it around by having Ed survive his attempts at human transmutation, but Al didn't. I know, I know, depressing, and it is, but this fic takes place several years past this event when Ed is known as the Demon Alchemist who goes around killing people who are murderers and pretty much case closed guilty parties. He's more than a little broken, but he's somehow still hilarious. He gets embroiled with both Roy (who treats him with a healthy dose of wariness and slight fear) and Hughes (who is as crazy as Ed, only in a different way) as well as this plot that threatens to destroy the world.

The character interactions are the best. The many layers of Ed interacting with Roy interacting with Hughes interacting with everyone else and the different relationships each person has to one another--well. And it's so true to canon it's amazing. Also, the funny. Ed perches in trees because that's a good vantage point! He frightens the pants off of people on purpose! Well. Sometimes.

The plot does get more serious later on, but it never dips into being too angst-heavy or without any laughter. It just makes me happy to read (not to mention even rereadings keep me up at night because I have to finish it--I may have a slight problem. Just slight.)

Author's Summary:
Five years after his arrival on an alternate world, a chance meeting with someone from his past gives Edward Elric the hope that maybe, just maybe, he might have found his ticket home.

Review:
This story follows after the Fullmetal Alchemist anime and does not include the movie. You have Ed who is traveling on a train and who meets a Roy Mustang who isn't his Roy Mustang, but somehow spills out his guts to the man anyway. It's not a very believable beginning, what with the spilling out one's entire past that is sure to sound crazy to the average person in alternate!universe land, but the fic soon smooths out and you have to admit that it gets the ball rolling.

Ed ends up staying with Roy, who's this eccentric rich person taking care of his niece after his brother and his wife died. Roy is actually integral to Ed's plans to get back home, and rather willingly goes along with Ed's schemes. They grow closer and Ed grows more attached to this other world, even though he still feels the need to get back to Al. There's a steadily growing relationship between alt!Roy and Ed and you find yourself wondering how things are going to end up.

It's a not a completely smooth fic. The pacing is a little bumpy and it's not completely polished, but you can certainly feel the emotions and get caught up in the fic anyway. It's very much a romance and it tugs on your heartstrings, and the ending is that sort of bittersweet feeling that ends up being more sweet than bitter and somehow makes you content anyway. With what happens in the fic I'm certainly glad with the way it ended, and it just fit. It's a great read for when you're in the mood for romance, and alt!Roy does have a way with the written word that sort of makes you sigh (in a good way!) and want to give him a hug. Or an Ed, haha.

Review:
Generally speaking I’m not the hugest fan of manga-centric fic. It’s one thing reading fic based on books where you really don’t know what any of the characters look like, but it’s entirely another thing trying to read fic about characters whose eyes are bigger than their hands. That being said, lightgetsin does a fantastic job of making a believer out of me.

The really fantastic thing about this series is the fact that it has all of the humor of the anime/manga plus. The humor is just as funny as Fullmetal Alchemist with tons of in-show jokes, plus adult humor. Roy’s jealousy is so perfect it’s not even funny. Al and Ed’s interactions are spot-on.

Anyone who has even a slight interest in Fullmetal Alchemist should give this a shot. It’s a fun fast read full of sharp dialogue and a hilarious relationship.

Summary: John comes back from the war broken in more ways than one.

Review: This is a strange little story. But surprisingly engaging.

John is a state medical alchemist and Sherlock is his usual quirky self just exacerbated by his ability to preform alchemy. Transmutation circles tend to show up in unusual places when he's around. (Such as bathtubs and cheese drawers.)

What really sets this story apart for me is the straightforward manner in which it is handled. No extraneous bits and pieces, no perfectly wrapped up ending. And for all the story is heartbreaking it is also bleak. It's a daring move on the part of the author and one I greatly admire.

Length:  Epic [~141,000 words]
Warnings:  implied past shota; violence; couple of narm scenes

Author on LJ:  n/a

Summary:  Edward Elric returns with amnesia; he's lived the past four years as Auric, a Gatekeeper, and has become a hardened warrior.  Will his friends be able to awaken Ed, and what happens to Auric if they do?  They'll need both Auric and Ed to defeat the homunculi...

Review:  Nike Femme does a good job with a plot that was very popular after the first FMA anime ended - namely, have Ed go somewhere other than the Other World depicted in the movie, and come back with a skills upgrade.  Most of these fics were not great, lending themselves to Gary-Stu Edwards very easily, but Nike Femme pulls this one off with only one misstep.

I liked how the author built up Ed's new personality, "Auric".  He came off as a real character, and as a plausible direction for an Edward with no memories to grow.  Yes, Auric has a lot of power, but his skills seem more like a burden than a blessing, and almost everyone in his Order of Gatekeepers is doomed as per their job description to die horribly in some sort of battle.  Auric interacts well with the FMA crew, and when the inevitable moment of memory-returning comes, he isn't swept under the carpet forever, thankfully.  I also liked how Roy and Ed's romance was built up.  I'm a sucker for separated lovers reuniting, and while Roy suffers quite a bit after realizing that Ed doesn't remember their relationship, it all comes out well.  In addition, I thought the action scenes were well done, with good imagery, and I liked the mash-up of anime and manga canon.  It worked very well to have the story continue past the action climax to the political maneuvering that is necessary for the winners to do, and to have a manga character show up at that stage to provide a new perspective on Ed and Roy's relationship.

I must throw in a caveat here, and that is the issue of "suddenly-songfic" moments.  If I recall correctly, significant portions of two chapters had Ed and Winry singing songs that a) aren't songs that are known to exist in the FMA universe, b) aren't even accurate for the time period, and c) are clearly there only because the author really likes those songs.  NO, no, just no.  Do not do this, authors.  Luckily, at least one of those scenes is completely skippable, and the other didn't make me wince too much - well, since I'm still reccing this, obviously I didn't think they spoiled the fic.  Fair warning, though!
