Wait Wait Don't Eat Me by Nestra (G)

Title: Wait Wait Don't Eat Me
Fandom: National Public Radio (Wait Wait Don't Tell Me) RPF, and a little Political RPF, and Fake News/Daily Show
Pairing: gen
Categories: crack, parody, humor, post-apocalyptic, supernatural (zombies), yuletide rec
Length: Short (1,002 words or 6:37 minutes podficced)
Warnings: RPF (Real Person Fic), implied death/zombification of real people

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nestra
Author Website: [archiveofourown.org profile]Nestra

Summary:
"We're going to be cutting our show a little short today, because, as you may have heard, there's an apocalypse happening! But we didn't let the election of Barack Obama stop us, and we're not going to let the zombie hordes stop us either."

Review:
And now for something completely different. Written for Yuletide 2009, this is RPF of the weekly NPR news quiz show, told in transcript format. Nestra perfectly captured the voices of the regular guests on the show, as they keep broadcasting during the zombie apocalypse and continue with their political satire.

Further, the podfic is amazing, especially if you've ever heard the show. They even have the Wait, Wait opening music, and each person is read by a different podficcer.

As long as transcript format and fic about real people aren't deal-breakers for you, this is a fun little fic with mentions of the Daily Show and politicians (and how they all would react to the zombie apocalypse) and a perfect imitation of the source material.

Expecting by reseda (PG-13)

Title: Expecting
Fandom: Fake News
Pairing: "Stephen Colbert"/Jon Stewart, various other pairings
Categories: drama, mpreg
Length: epic (55,000 words)
Warnings: mpreg

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] reseda_ptah
Author Website: erinptah.com

Summary: In which Stephen decides that he could totally get pregnant. How hard could it be?

Review: First of all, yes, this is Stephen Colbert mpreg. And it's completely amazing. There are images and illustrations, and links to relevant clips from the show - reseda's fic is meticulously researched, and parts of it match up with the show. If you're a fan of detail, you'll love this story. Expecting is set in the universe of the Colbert Report, where "Stephen Colbert" really is as he appears on television (as the author calls it, the Reportverse: "the one in which Stephen is a real egomaniac and [the Daily Show] is a real news show"). The characterizations are perfect; reseda writes "Stephen" just as well as the writers on the Colbert Report.

If you end up liking Expecting, there's an entire 'verse built around this story, which is equally terrific.

Title: Love Bites
Fandom: Fake News/Strangers with Candy RPF/30 Rock RPF
Pairing: Amy Sedaris/Stephen Colbert/Paul Dinello, Janeane Garofalo/Jon Stewart/Denis Leary
Categories: action-adventure, au, horror
Length: epic (42,000 words)
Warnings: zombie violence, near-death (serious illness) of a character. also, the link to the masterpost has some slightly NSFW art (zombie violence and partial nudity).

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] themistoklis
Author Website: n/a

Summary: Amy and Stephen went out to save the world. Paul was just buying milk. But with only one in a million people resistant to the zombie virus chewing away at the edges of the world (including Stephen), every second counts, and a smartass pair of scientists could use an extra driver to get them to the east coast. Even if Paul is just a sci-fi writer. They meet up with his friend Janeane, who turns out to already be living with two other guys. Denis, now, Paul at least knows, but he's only heard stories about Jon. When the three of them agree to escort the scientists who looked after Paul across the city, Amy ends up getting bitten. And that's not the worst part.

Review: This fic is unlike any other rpf story I've ever read, though that could be because I don't read zombie fic often. It's a pretty action-heavy story - there's no shortage of zombie violence here, which should sate your thirst for human brains horror and action. The relationship between Paul, Stephen, and Amy is really interesting to see develop, and I love the way they're all portrayed. I don't know a lot about zombies so I can't say how this compares to other zombie fic, but it's definitely a good read if you're familiar with these characters and want to see an original AU take on them.

Review:
It's another year at Hogwarts (urm, some mythical extra year around book five, I think) and it's time to answer the most interesting question of any Harry Potter book: who *is* the latest Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher? The answer? Professor Colbert! Let's all give him a round of applause.

As you all know, I don't read a lot of Harry Potter fanfic (well, okay, back when I wrote this review I wasn't reading a lot of HP fic), but the premise of this story caught my eye and I decided to give it a shot. Man am I glad I did. Even though I've never seen The Colbert Report, I could guess what a typical show is like by the way he runs his Defense Against the Dark Arts class. The Word? Voldemort! Threat-Down #5? House-Elf Liberationists! And let's not forget the big interview (I'll let you read the story to find out who that one is). A great fic for anyone wanting a bit of snarky, sly humor.

Harry Potter and the Eagle of Truthiness
And I'm back! (Just in case anyone noticed I was gone.) I want to thank Mei for filling in with me while I was on vacation:)
