Review:
After a long and eventful life, Bulma dies. Yet she is not content to have a place in heaven if this means being away from Vegeta for all eternity...

Considering that most DBZ fics read as if they were written by twelve-year-olds (probably because most likely they were written by twelve-year-olds), it is refreshing to find a well written DBZ story with an interesting plot. As this is the same author that wrote some of my favorite SGA fics, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that Sholio managed to accomplish it.

I love that despite the fact that this is very clearly a Bulma/Vegeta story, Sholio managed to avoid all the clichés that abound about them (there's no "Sayan bond" or mating compulsion here) and keep the story from becoming overly soppy despite it's overall theme of love transcending death. Romance has always been an afterthought in DBZ canon, but though it becomes more prominent here, it doesn't erase a lot of the great things about the original series: Bulma's determination and versatility, Vegeta's inability to truly share his feelings, the interesting structure of the afterlife in the DB universe and the 'perks' allowed to the Z fighters and the intricate bonds of blood and friendship that tie all the characters.

In short, this is a great Bulma-centric B/V fic that manages to showcase the depth of their love while still being very much in character, a rarity that needs to be appreciated.

Pure Evil Series by Sefiru (NC13)

Length: Epic (60,300)

Review: The Pure Evil Series is a Vegeta/Goku BDSM romance series. The relationship between Vegeta and Goku is very kinky, but in a good way. It seems perfectly natural within the universe the series is written in.

I absolutely love Vegeta's point of view. All of the point of views are written well, but Vegeta's is what holds the stories together. His devotion to Goku, the return of the Sayain race, and his families' antics are all related in a manner that is dry, relatable, and just strange enough to feel alien.

Summary: Trunks was about to return to the past to give the heart disease antidote to Goku when a tragedy hit. Would he be able to survive it?

Review: Hope For Life is one of the few gen Dragonball fics I’ve absolutely fallen in love with. I’ve always loved the character of Maria Trunks and Hope for Life concentrates on his life before he comes to Dragonball’s canon time-line.

This is an AU and a heartbreaking story that deals with the possibility of Bulma dying in the alternate time-line. Trunks is wonderfully vulnerable as he tries to find a way to die without directly killing himself. Goku is serious without being majorly OC. Gohan is kind and sweet without appearing wimpy and Vegeta is suspicious without being a bastard. All told this is one of the best character pieces I’ve ever seen in the Dragonball fandom.

And not to worry, while the premise is heartbreaking the ending is hopeful and sweet.

Title: The Saiyaman Saga
Fandom: Dragonball Z
Pairing: Goku/Vegeta, Gohan/Piccolo, Goten/Trunks
Categories: AU, Crack, Drama, Established Relationship, Family, Friendship, Humor, Mpreg
Length: Long (32,600)
Warnings: Homophobia, Xenophobia, Mpreg

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kc_anathema

Summary: Vegeta and Piccolo decide that something has to be done about Gohan’s over the top acting as Saiyaman(or why you should never trust a Namekian to pick a super-villain costume).

Review: The Saiyaman Saga is on the cracky side of the Dragon Ball Fandom. The first story in particular is a comedy. The second and third stories mix in a bit of angst and drama while still keeping their original humorous tone.

For all this series is relatively light and fluffy it also deals with more serious matters like xenophobia and homophobia. It also goes into what really makes a person a Supervillain. KC is one of those rare authors who can successfully mix escapism with deep philosophical questions and the Saiyaman saga really showcases that ability.
